5 things to look forward to when nothing seems certain

By Kelsey O'Kelley

Although nothing in life is ever guaranteed, the coronavirus pandemic and the quarantine lifestyle definitely bring this fact into the light. What can you look forward to during these uncertain times? Turns out there are still some things to get excited about.

1. As of today, April 23, there are 59 days until summer. While summer parties, concerts, and walks with friends might be cancelled, the warm weather won’t be. Sitting on your front porch or feeling a summery breeze float through the window won’t be cancelled, either.

2. That video or phone chat with your friend/neighbor/grandson. Scheduling these “hangouts” in advance helps to put something on the calendar. Pour yourself a cup of coffee (or in my case, a lavender chai tea latte) and catch up with a buddy.

3. That latest read from your favorite author is probably just around the bend. Some book releases might be postponed, but plenty aren’t. I have several books pre-ordered on Amazon that will be shipped on their release days. Ordering a new book and making that countdown to its arrival is a small jolt of excitement. And most importantly, you can count down to the next edition of The Sun Day (t-minus 14 days until the May 7 paper!).

4. Time off from screen time and intentional screen time. I’ve been doing this – challenging myself – to spend some days with less screen time than other days, and it is definitely something to look forward to.

On the other hand, some activities on the screen are major reasons to get excited. Maybe you’re looking forward to your live-streamed Sunday church service or online daily Mass. Or maybe you can’t wait for the latest episode of a show you watch.

5. The little things. I surveyed a large group of friends (and friends of friends) to see what they personally look forward to during these quarantine days. Here are some of the most common responses:

– Time to relax without guilt
– Sunny days
– Seeing flowers blooming
– Bird watching
– Snuggling with pets
– That first sip of coffee

How are you getting through the quarantine? What keeps you going? Let me know at kelsey@mysundaynews.com.
