The Sweet Repeats Thrift Shoppe located at 10514 West Route 47 in Huntley, announced on Aug. 4 that the store will be officially closing for business on Wednesday, Sep. 15.
A Sweet Repeats press release revealed that the reason for the closure is due to the store losing its lease.
Sweet Repeats is owned by the non-denominational Christ Community Church, which operates five campuses throughout Illinois.
The Huntley area Christ Community Church (10547 Faiths Way) officially adopted the Journey Church in Jan. 2021, making it the newest addition of the other four existing campuses.
Sweet Repeats opened back in June 2010, according to Eric Hamsho, the executive pastor of ministries at Christ Community Church.
Back in July 2013, however, the store moved to a new location within the now-defunct Huntley Outlet Center.
Despite the thrift shop no longer being able to remain at its current location, Hamsho was asked if it was possible to just move Sweet Repeats to a new building.
“After searching the Huntley area, it was determined that a lease that fit our financial parameters and didn’t require significant capital investment, was not available,” Hamsho explained.
Having said that, Hamsho stated that the church does not have any plans to open another resale shop but “is always exploring opportunities to impact the community.”
The thrift shop is no longer accepting donations as of Aug. 6 (except for previously scheduled pickups), and will not be delivering furniture after Sep. 1.
Any furniture purchased after Sep. 1 will need to be picked up as well as will require individuals to bring their help since Sweet Repeats says they will not have anyone around to assist in loading furniture into vehicles.
Additionally, as of Aug. 9, the whole store has every item priced at 30% off.
Sweet Repeats was well known as an avid supporter of various local charities including the Grafton Food Pantry, Community Santa Project, and the Transition Light Program through Huntley Community School District 158.
All proceeds from the outlet mall Sweet Repeats store were even being directed to the Pioneer Center for Human Services, a McHenry County-based non-profit agency that provides various services for youth and adults.
Despite the closing of the beloved retail shop, Hamsho states that he is pleased to see all of the bonds the store has created throughout its 11 years in business.
“Sweet Repeats has worked hard to enhance the community. We are grateful for the trust of our long-standing customers and the faithfulness of employees and volunteers,” Hamsho said.
With the store’s chapter coming to an end, one can only wonder if Christ Community Church will find other ways to continue the spirit of Sweet Repeats.
“Sweet Repeats has had a unique role in the community that has fostered many special relationships. Christ Community Church, while new to the Huntley community, is a place where these and other relationships can continue to grow,” Hamsho said.
He continued, “We are passionate about encouraging people as they grow in their relationship with God. We are planning a grand opening week full of activities for the entire family. We would like to invite the Huntley community to stop by and learn more about us.”
Huntley’s Christ Community Church will begin its grand opening week on Aug. 29, starting with a worship night.
