Winter is coming, and the Sew N Sews are ready.
On November 1, the Sew N Sews presented 96 pairs of mittens, 180 hats, and 100 scarves to Grafton Food Pantry.
Denise Mahaney, President of Sew N Sews, said, “We had approximately 35 members who worked on this special project. Normally we would do this project as individuals for the Christmas tree which stands in Prairie Lodge each year. Since our sewing and quilting members were involved with items for our Craft Fair, Linus, and Community Service projects, we wanted to give members who prefer a yarn medium and smaller sewing projects to become involved in a large community project as well. Thus, the concerted effort, which exceeded what we agreed to do, for Grafton Food Pantry. We also wanted to highlight that the Pantry provides a lot more to the community than just food.”
The Sew N Sew Club’s dedicated volunteers always contribute their time, hearts, and skills by knitting, crocheting, hats, and sewing, scarves, socks, and mittens. But this project has a mission.
Mahaney said, “Although the Sew N Sews is known for their commitment to helping neighbors and children in crisis through our wheelchair quilts, comfort quilts, Project Linus, walker bags for aluminum frame walkers, hats for those who have lost their hair, making baby caps and blankets for area hospitals and our newest endeavor Dress-A-Girl, we also do special projects suggested by members during the year.”
The Sew n Sew’s efforts will provide warm and beautiful coverings for the predicted cold and snowy winter for Illinois by the Farmer’s Almanac.
Harriet Ford, Board of Directors, Grafton Food Pantry said, “Grafton Food Pantry is so delighted to be the recipient of this wonderful gift from the Sew & Sews. These beautifully crafted hats, scarves, gloves, and slippers are a true labor of love for our neighbors who are in need of a little warmth during the winter months ahead. Each stitch is a message to our clients, especially the children, that someone cares and took the time to do something special for them.”
All material for this project was supplied by members or was part of larger estate donations. The Sew N Sews could not do a variety of charitable projects during the year without the generosity of our members and other Sun City residents.
