One Sun City FB group can’t get enough of popular word game

By Christine Such

Sun City – One of The Wildflower Lake Neighbors’ Facebook Group Page Administrators, Mark Schinler, introduced a new challenge on Facebook: “Wordle, A Daily Word Game Click the NY Times link below to play. You have six tries to guess a target five-letter word. All players have the same target word to solve. Get bragging rights for the best score in this fun and simple-to-play, yet challenging game.”

Wordle is a simple online game that’s gained traction in the world and has captured Sun City residents’ interest also. It’s free, fun, and feverishly addictive.

Schinler posted on Facebook, “Wordle is an online word game that’s a cross between Scrabble and hangman. Keeps your mind young.”

Andrea Berebitsky, Sun City Resident, said, “Love WORDLE! It is a wake-up call in the morning!”

A pleasant little daily brainteaser, Wordle is a simple, shareable word-guessing game. A poll taken on the WildFlower Facebook page found that at least 100 neighbors play WORDLE at least a couple of times per week.

How was Wordle created?

Wordle was developed by Welsh engineer Josh Wardle, naming it with a play on his last name. He created it for his partner, who loved word games, then sent it to his family’s group chat. Seeing the enthusiasm, he expanded it and opened it to the public. Players have six attempts to guess a five-letter word, with feedback given for each guess in the form of colored tiles indicating when letters match or occupy the correct position.

Judy Keegan agreeing with Berebisky said, “A great way to start the day, gets me thinking and a good way to keep the mind sharp.”

And Kathy Pieroni-Wendhack agreed.

“I find wordle to be a good wake up to go along with my coffee!” she said.

Does Wordle help the brain?

Bonnie Sterzenbach said, “I took a class, years ago, from Dr. Cynthia Green, an expert on memory/brain health. She promoted timed tasks as being most beneficial for enhancing brain health. I love the game!”

Cindy Ptak said, “As a self-described word nerd I have been enjoying playing this daily, even when I fail! It’s got to be good for my brain, after all. I already play online word games, trivia games, and even solitaire once in a while. I do crossword and jigsaw puzzles, as well. Anything to keep my brain active.”

The phenomenon had gotten bigger than Wardle imagined. The game now has 2.5 million players, and it is growing.

He sold the game to the New York Times in February.

Part of the charm of Wordle is that you can only do it once a day. But that’s part of the frustration, too. Some players just can’t wait until the next day. Sterzenbach said, I often play just after midnight, as soon as the new one comes out!”
