Anytime a new restaurant opens up in our area, it causes quite a stir, especially when itâs not the usual fast food. We have been receiving a lot of questions and comments concerning a new breakfast/lunch venue that recently opened in Pingree Grove. To see what all the fuss was about, we headed out one morning to get the lowdown. It is located in the ârestaurant rowâ strip mall off of Route 47 on Route 20. In there is Nikoâs Neighborhood Grill, Hartâs Garage, China Wok, and at the very end is the newly opened Maple & Hash.

When you first walk through the door you have to make a decision. Behind the door to your left is the Coffee & Danish Bar, and to your right is the restaurant. Since the inside dining area is small, they offer outdoor seating as well. Rumor has it, they will enclose this area as the temperature drops. The décor was very creative with lights hanging off of stained wood palettes.
Their specialty coffee menu features such delights as a Salted Caramel Fudge Latte ($6), and a Vanilla Lavender Latte ($6).
Now for something completely different. They have a cocktail menu
featuring such morning wake-me-ups as the M & H Hot Buttered Rum ($12), and the ever-popular Cereal Killer ($12). The latter is made with rum, brown sugar syrup, and homemade cereal milk. Good morningâŠ
Nancy was looking over the menu and couldnât help noticing that although the name of the restaurant is Maple & Hash, to her disappointment, hash is nowhere on the menu. The restaurant should be called âMaple, No Hash.â She chose the B.Y.O.O. (build your own omelet) for $13. This comes with two ingredients, and she chose bacon and onion. Each additional ingredient is a $1 upcharge, and she wanted American cheese and jalapenos. She opted for the hash browns (crunchy of course) as her side. It is also served with toast. The hash browns were good, but the rye toast turned out to be one slice of very thin, unbuttered dryness. Evidently, you have to ask for butter or jelly. The omelet was delicious, but she wanted rye bread, not marble rye.
Jim ordered the Bacon Cheddar Egg Sandwich ($13). This was arugula, bacon, scrambled eggs, cheddar cheese, and sriracha aioli on a brioche bun and served with your choice of potato. He chose the diced potatoes as his side. When his entrĂ©e arrived, he noticed there was no bacon on his Bacon, Cheddar, Egg Sandwich. Maybe the restaurant should be called âCheddar, No Bacon.â He told the waitress that the bacon went missing, and she returned with three strips of bacon. He wasnât aware that the sandwich was B.Y.O.S. (build your own sandwich) since he had to disassemble it and add the bacon. The sandwich, once he got it back together again was tasty, but the star of the dish were the diced potatoes. They were seasoned deep fried crunchiness.
In closing, we think this restaurant has a lot of potential, but judging from our experience and the people around us, too many mistakes were being made. Due to the high ceilings, the noise level is deafening. If you are going with friends to socialize, turn up your hearing aids!!!
