Nearly 700 cancer survivors and supporters joined forces to champion the 2nd Annual Wellness Place Community Cancer 3K Walk/5K Run on May 14 at Harper College. Even unseasonably cold, windy and rainy weather could not dampen the spirits of those who walked and ran to build awareness, celebrate survivors and raise funds for Wellness Place, cancer education and support, in Palatine, IL.
“It was amazing to see the support garnered by those who joined our cause to ensure no one walks their cancer journey alone,” said Pam Reiss, Executive Director of Wellness Place. “Our second annual Community Cancer Walk/Run built on the incredible success of the first and our goal is to continue this momentum so we can reach out to more individuals and their families in our community during their time of need.”
In addition to the 3k walk and 5k run, participants personalized balloons for the survivor celebration and remembrance balloon release. The morning fun also featured live music courtesy of Fremd High School’s Women’s A Cappella Group and DJ Event Entertainment. Refreshments, a raffle and kids’ activities, including a bounce house and face painting, were also part of the festivities. It was a great day for a great cause – close to home – as all proceeds stay locally in the community. Event participants made a true difference with a significant 39% increase in donations raised over 2010’s inaugural walk/run. “Having the support of our participants, their families, neighbors and co-workers is an incredible vote of confidence as to the value of our services,” says LeeAnn Atwood, Director of Marketing at Wellness Place. “A 39% increase during a tough economy is amazing and we are truly grateful for all of their hard work.”
