SUN CITY – This year’s Six County Senior Olympics has concluded with all three Sun City, Huntley, teams being awarded medals in their respective sports. Teams were entered in both the age 60+ and age 70+ divisions of the Softball Tournament and one team in the recreational division of the Volleyball Tournament.
The Sun City Cutters, managed by Glenn Groebli and sponsored by Chris’ Lawn Service, won the 70’s Division of the Softball Tournament and Gold Medals while successfully defending their Gold Medal title from last year’s tournament. The games, which took place at Elk Grove Village, included the defeat of a strong Lombard team by a score of 7-3 and a win over the Schaumburg team entry in the finale by a score of 4-1. The team’s efforts featured great pitching and solid defense.
The Huntley Del Webbers, managed by Richard Desmond and sponsored by Chad Radtke State Farm Insurance, competed in the 60’s Division of the Softball Tournament. The team easily won its first game against the Elk Grove Barons by a score of 10-1 but were outscored by the Elk Grove Mavericks 7-4 in the finale resulting in the award of Silver Medals to the Huntley team. This was the third year of the team’s competition in the tournament, after having won both Gold and Bronze Medals previously.
A third team, including four Sun City residents, competed in the Recreational Division of the Volleyball Tournament. Managed by Dave Keys and sponsored by Huntley Park District, the Huntley team defeated teams from Niles, two from Palatine and two from Hoffman Estates before falling to a strong Wheaton team resulting in award of Silver Medals. Although the tournament was open to players aged 50 and up, the Huntley players were all aged 63 to 73.
