Huntley High School’s Career and Technical Education Department Chair, Nick Wedoff, emphasizes the invaluable role Sun City residents can play in shaping the future for students.
“Your expertise is not just a resource but a catalyst for our students’ growth. They need to hear what the day-to-day experience in the workplace is like and what opportunities there are for their interests,” he said.
The volunteer needs are in engineering: civil, electrical, mechanical, aerospace, industrial, and software. Former educators are needed as guest speakers and help students write lesson plans. Business Professionals who are willing to be guest speakers on provided topics are also needed. Human Development Classes need guest speakers for labor and delivery and mentoring from doctors, nurses, and Health care workers. Personal Finance area speakers are needed, including retirement savings/planning. Any resident is invited to talk about choosing a retirement community. Students would like to hear from the culinary professions and participate as guest taste testers and cooking lessons with students. Students are interested in hearing from the sewing/crafting members of the community and sharing their embroidery, sewing, embroidering, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and experience in the fashion field.
Delores Fischer has volunteered at Huntley High School for the last two years.
“It’s so phenomenal,” she said. “I enjoy being at the school and working with the students.”
Wedoff said, “We would welcome some meaningful input from residents. We want help with how to interview, how to partner with companies in their field of interest, and how to pursue a future career with company internships.”
Eileen Delahanty, School District 158 Volunteer Coordinator, said, “We are asking for any time that can be given to the students, whether it be a one-time presentation or some time each week, or mentoring a student and commenting with them.”
Volunteering at Huntley High School is not just a rewarding experience for the residents, but it also significantly impacts the students.
Fischer says, “The residents will have a wonderful time with the students. The kids are so well prepared and want our help.” Fischer is a frequent visitor to the high school. She was a math teacher for 41 years.
“It’s been so much fun. I help with students’ presentations and build power points,” she said.
Wedoff said, “We are so grateful to Delores. They are growing because of her help. We appreciate her time and care.”
