To college football coaches, it is well known that those of you at schools that are televised, have highly talented and well compensated players. You still should consider yourself role models and leaders. I believe that gives you a responsibility of demanding a certain decorum and respect from your players. How they act reflects on themselves, you the adult coach, the school and your program. I am not sure when good sportsmanship has been discouraged or ignored.
I always learned there was pride in winning and losing with grace and class. Yes, your men play with heightened emotion and energy. That should allow them to play harder, not meaner.
Winning or losing that should not allow your players to disrespect the other players or fields. Screaming or chanting at the other team. Blocking their path. Planting a flag in their logo. And worse. Why do you not address this behavior so it is not repeated.
Teachers and coaches, have a responsibility above and beyond academics and athletics. To be an example as well as expect learning and performance. But above all else to be a respectful player of the game.
Winning is important. It brings money and future players to your school. Playing with grace, win or lose, brings respect.
