Sun City couple backs non-chemical cleaning

By Steve Peterson

Concerned over the impacts of cleaning tools which have chemicals in everyday use, a Sun City couple decided to take action.

Five years ago, Genny and Derek Knight joined Norwex Independent Consultants. ā€œImproving the quality of life by radically reducing chemicals in our homes is our mission and passion,” according to the Norwex flier.

At the Village of Huntley Farmers Market March 8, the Knights explained various products of Norwex Inc.

The monthly Huntley Indoor Farmers Market event was held at Huntley Village Hall. The market included a theme of St. Patrick’s Day and free corned beef sandwiches for early arrivals and the site was a hit with the 25 vendors. Next month’s Indoor Farmers Market will be April 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

ā€œThis is the first year we have used village hall as the Indoor Farmers Market location and the response has been very positive,ā€ Village of Huntley Community Engagement Coordinator Steve Skurski said. ā€œIt’s a larger space which allows us to have additional vendors and activities for visitors. We encourage anyone who hasn’t visited the indoor market to stop by in April. Our outdoor weekly markets begin on May 31 in Huntley Town Square.ā€

“The response today has been outstanding, busy since the time we opened,” Genny Knight said.

The Knights gave some tips on how to get started with Norwex products.

“I would recommend starting with wet and dry cloths and then going to other products,” Derek Knight said.

“Their products never have any chemicals, and nothing that attracts dirt, because they can be so hazardous,” Genny Knight said. “They also have a list of many products in personal care and household uses that they never use.”

Norwex’s “no-no” list includes Benzophenones, BHA, BHT, Coal tar and derivatives, heavy metals such as led and mercury and sulfates for personal care. For the household, these include chlorine, mineral oil, phosphates, and triclosan.

The Knights prefer to wash in water, not soap.

“The company has been international for 30 years,” Genny Knight said. “One thing I like about them is they have never taken out a loan.”

Quilt maker

Meanwhile, Brandi Pond, owner of Peace of Me quilting and embroidery, showed her memory quilts and other items she made recently for sale.

“Give me a t-shirt and I can have a memory quilt done in about 10 to 15 days,” Pond, of Huntley, said. “I started the business in 2012 in Schaumburg, and am self-taught for quilting and embroidery. I use a sewing machine and an embroidery machine. I moved to Huntley in 2021, and after making five, have made 87 quilts last year. It’s been a good year.”

Ready for spring

Huntley Farmers Market every month participants Marcy and Trogg Prachal, owners of Trogg’s Hollow, are ready for spring, whose weather made an appearance this week. As always, their stand was outside at the monthly market. Trogg’s Hollow is located on 11 acres near Poplar Grove in Boone County.

ā€œI’m excited, ready for winter to be over,ā€ Marcy Prachal said. ā€œWe’ve ordered seeds for the summer, and have kale and cauliflower growing, and tomatoes will be planted. This has been a great day, the best indoor market we’ve seen in a long time.ā€

Another coming Village of Huntley event will be the Arbor Day tree planting at municipal complex grounds April 25 at 4:30 p.m.
