Beat the hectic holidays

By Joanie Koplos

If seniors have learned two important facts about holiday shopping, it is to do it early and carefully when sales become available. Besides shopping in stores, today’s seniors also have the convenience of online shopping, which can even produce bigger savings in purchases. Either form of holiday purchasing invites us to become better gift givers this year. You’ll then bring more joy to your family and friends, spend your holiday budget wisely, and reduce the stress that’s associated with Christmas/Hanukkah shopping.

Here are some simple tips to keep in mind as you begin or continue to purchase those important gifts:

(1) Weeks or even months before December appears, make a complete list of everyone you will buy for.

(2) Set a budget that is both realistic and uncompromising.

(3) On the list, plan out gift ideas.

(4) Keep your list with you at all times; keep it up to date.

(5) Watch for ads and sales that may also use coupons and rebates.

(6) Don’t be afraid to cut back if you need help with your budget. Two ways of doing this are by (a) Giving gifts of service: babysitting, housecleaning, or maintenance chores. (b) Giving gifts of time: photo gifts (making DVDs and digital photo albums) and creating art or craft items.

Why not try something “truly in the spirit of giving” this year and donate gifts to underprivileged children or to soldiers in the Middle East. In addition, the service gift of volunteering for a special charity is always welcomed!
