McHENRY – The 2010 McHenry County Healthy Community Study reported that lung cancer is the leading cause of death in McHenry County among men and women ages 45 to 75. Centegra Health System and the McHenry County Department of Health partner to provide āFreedom from Smokingā classes that teach practical ways to end nicotine addiction.
āWe know quitting isnāt easy. To be successful, people need to be aware of the challenges they will face and the different options available for getting help,ā Celine Pope, wellness manager with Centegra Health System, said.
The class offers group support and behavior modification and reviews the nicotine replacement products currently on the market.
āHaving support is very important when people are trying to quit. Share plans to quit with family and friends and ask them for support during the process,ā Pope said. āThe Freedom from Smoking class also offers support and tools to help people be successful.ā
The McHenry County Department of Health staff members who are trained in the American Lung Associationās Freedom from Smoking program teach the class. Classes will be conducted from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 12 to Feb. 23 at Centegra Health Bridge Fitness Center-Huntley located at 10450 Algonquin Road.
