Recently, many Sun City residents, including Jules Pelka (right), gathered with Shepherd of the Prairie Lutheran Church for a day of planting at the Green Trees Housing complex in Huntley.
Village of Huntley Trustee Pam Fender (left) is in charge of finding volunteer labor for this ongoing community project of re-landscaping the entire grounds of the low-income senior and developmentally-disabled apartment complex.
Hundreds of volunteer hours have helped plant trees, bushes, perennial flowers, and native grasses. The McHenry County Housing Authority owns and manages the complex; they have a small grant to get much of this work done, but the volunteer labor has helped their work five-fold. The Sun City Lions have participated by donating some of the new oak trees.
Multiple groups such as: the Huntley Jaycees, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Huntley High School and Marlowe Middle School, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts have contributed to this project, which was started last fall. Shepard of the Prairie has made a long-term commitment to this mission and will host a garage sale on June 15 and 16, where 10 percent of the profits will be donated to the project.
