Summer packed into one Sun CIty parade

By Brad Wagner

SUNCITY – Summer is here. This is a time of festivals, visits from grandchildren, trips to the beach, and parades. The 12th Annual Patriotic Outdoor Concert, Golf Cart, and Vintage Car Parade on Sunday, July 1 combines several summer traditions and may start some new ones.

The parade was started when the Lifestyles Department partnered with Sun City residents Carter and Joanie Berg.

Through the efforts of Bill and Darlene Haseman, the Golf Cart Parade chair couple of N.3, and Special Events Coordinator Jane Tennant, this year’s parade has become something more. This year, the parade has added a performance by the Sun City Concert Band, concessions provided by Jameson’s Restaurant, the inclusion of vintage cars in the parade, and awards for the best decorated carts and cars.

Tennant and the Hasemans are tasked with making sure the parade runs like a well-oiled machine as well as orchestrating the judging portion of the parade. Winners will be selected from the following four categories: decorated individual golf cart, decorated neighborhood golf cart, decorated charter club golf cart, and classic car.

The Sun City Concert band will start the music at 11 a.m. and will finish entertaining the audience at noon. The parade will begin at approximately 12:30 p.m.

“We organized with the neighborhoods and clubs to get them to enter a cart. We went further with adding the classic cars,” Haseman said. “I like the decorated carts. That’s probably the best part of the parade for me.”

To make sure your cart or classic car gets to join all the festivities, head over to the Prairie Lodge Customer Service Desk to fill out the free parade registration form.

“I hope they [residents] enjoy it. I hope they want to get involved more so next year,” said Haseman.
