MCHENRY COUNTY- Times are tough. This fact becomes even more acute around the holidays. Thankfully, Jerry Macey of the former Share Food Buying Club has helped bring Loaves and Fishes of Crystal Lake, McHenry Evangelical Free Church, and Mid America Foods to McHenry County to help residents purchase food at a reduced rate.
Mid America Foods helps people save 25 to 40 percent compared to grocery store pricing.
“In our opinion [Mid America Foods] could offer the best food at the most reasonable cost,” Macey said. “Mid America Foods is a food ministry . . . It’s like a food buying club . . . the advantage is group buying power.”

This group buying power allows Mid America Foods to buy bulk quantities of delicious food at a discounted price.
“It’s the same quality of food that you would find in restaurants or grocery stores,” Macey said. “What I would like [to do] is educate families in McHenry County concerned about their food budgets . . . This will eliminate [that concern].”
Mid America Foods has a monthly food package for $30, and a box for larger families for $39. They also offer six to seven other package choices, including frozen fruits and vegetables, select meats, breakfasts, Italian food, top sirloin, and chicken tenderloin. Holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas are also available. They will feed a family of five to six for about $30.00.
“I personally checked out the quality [of the food], and people’s opinion [of] the food, and I couldn’t find anything against it,” Macey said.
Loaves and Fishes’ and Mid America Foods’ initial delivery point will be at the McHenry Evangelical Free Church with Crystal Lake and Harvard soon to follow. Currently they are looking for two to three more sites to make it convenient for all residents of McHenry County. Macey said Sun City and Woodstock would be great choices.
“I would like to find a place as a distribution point so that when the food is delivered by truck it can be distributed straight from Sun City. It’s really easy. We can show people how to do it in a couple of hours. I need about eight people to volunteer,” Macey said.
