Passwords, filters removed from Prairie Lodge Wi-Fi

By Mason Souza

SUN CTIY – Sun City residents will likely find it simpler to connect to Prairie Lodge’s wireless Internet network as the SCAAH Board voted to remove the passwords formerly required before residents could log on.

Board President Bonnie Bayser said the idea to remove passwords came from residents who found the former password system cumbersome. That system included passwords that changed every month for security purposes.

Password removal is not the only change coming to Wi-Fi service in Prairie Lodge, however. The board also voted to remove web filters, so residents will no longer be stopped from accessing certain content or pages on the Prairie Lodge network. The decision was prompted by residents who asked why filters were in effect around the Lodge but not in the Lodge’s library.

A third change made during the meeting was the decision to bring Wi-Fi access to Prairie Lodge’s Solarium near Jameson’s – an area previously inaccessible to residents.

Bayser said the board does not believe the removal of password requirements or filters will cause any security problems with the network, but the policy can be re-evaluated should that change.

“We can always revisit that policy like we do any other policy,” she said.

Members of the IT Department did not reply to questions regarding the changed policies.
