Tip 16: Repair a Squeaky door

In an informal survey at the woodshop of household problems, the problem most mentioned was squeaky doors. We discussed a number of ways to fix the problem, including turning up the radio to drown out the squeak. The problem most often is caused by the hinges running dry of lubricant, causing the metal parts to rub together, making a squeaking noise.

Are you an impulsive buyer?

A recent study conducted about consumer buying habits by ShopSmart magazine indicated that 60% of the respondents identified themselves as impulsive buyers. This didn’t really surprise me after I considered a typical shopping experience in the grocery store. It’s like entering a minefield.

This is take two on my commentaries on eligibility criteria for the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. In take one, as you may recall, I stated the case for Pete Rose’s election to the hall, despite his gambling activities.

Tip 13: Water heater

There are two types of gas water heaters used in Sun City. Up until about 2003, an open combustion-chamber water heater was used. Starting in 2003, the sealed combustion-chamber unit, aka Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant (FVIR), was used. The purpose of the new safety standard is to prevent the ignition of any flammable liquids spilled or stored near a water heater. In the older open-combustion chamber water heaters, the combustion air entered directly into the combustion chamber.

In my younger years, I used to save the “points” that came inside the Mallo Cup and Peanut Butter Cup candy bars. I can remember cashing in the points for all sorts of prizes. Then there were the prizes inside the Cracker Jack boxes. I would drive my mother crazy at the grocery store “whining” for candy just because I needed a few more points so I could send away for the next prize. Now, many years later, we carry on the tradition with coupons.
