Lightning alert system’s disappearance sparks concern

After twenty years Sun City finds itself with one less safety feature. The lightening alert system that was located on the Whisper Creek golf course and served the adjacent neighborhoods is gone.

“It’s not ours,” said Dominic Flood, General Manager of Whisper Creek. “Ask the Association” was his response to the status of the lightening alert system.

Huntley-area thrift shop says goodbye after 11 years in business

The Sweet Repeats Thrift Shoppe located at 10514 West Route 47 in Huntley, announced on Aug. 4 that the store will be officially closing for business on Wednesday, Sep. 15.

A Sweet Repeats press release revealed that the reason for the closure is due to the store losing its lease.

Board discusses cyclists, golf cart traffic, and re-emerging club activities

Like a puppy with a sock that won’t let go, residents started the July 28 Sun City Board meeting with comments on Bicycle and Walker’s safety and Amazon truck traffic on Del Webb Blvd. The new wrinkle was the concern of the re-zoning of the property at Route 47 and Dhamer Drive.

D158 property tax fund investigation continues

The investigation into Senate Bill 508 brought up the question of how much property tax money is Sun City paying into District 158. School Districts were major proponents of the new law since property taxes are the primary source of revenue for the schools and revenue shortfalls have a direct impact on the curriculum.

Property tax collection changes may burden residential owners

With a stroke of the pen, governor JB Pritzker will change the property tax assessment landscape in the state of Illinois.

A vocal opponent to Senate Bill 508, Andrea Raila, a long-time property tax appeals specialist, said in an interview, “If this bill is signed by the governor, it will be the worst property tax shift in decades.”

Village trustees content with conceptual plans to amend Huntley’s Gateway Plan

At the village’s June 24 board meeting, Charles Nordman, Huntley’s director of development services, gave a presentation to the village board regarding Huntley Development Limited Partnership (HDLP) in their request for the board to conceptually review a revised proposal for rezoning the properties at both the northwest corners of Route 47 and Jim Dhamer Drive and Freeman Road.

At his recent visit to MCC, President Biden highlighted his ‘Build Back Better’ agenda. His arrvial in Crystal Lake drew both supporters and protestors, most of which Trump supporters. HUNTLEY – When Huntley Trustee Ronda Goldman, isn’t focusing her efforts in providing a voice for her constituents during Village Board meetings, she keeps herself busy with other activities such as being a member of the Huntley Area Lions Club.

Truck traffic major item at recent board meeting

Truck traffic and bicycle signage were topics during the Members Comments segment of the June 23 Sun City Board meeting. One resident voiced concern with the current and future increase of tractor trailer traffic on Del Webb Boulevard resulting from the future Amazon distribution center. Another spoke in favor of additional signage alerting drivers to cyclists and pedestrians on the communities streets.

Village of Huntley adds eCommerce option

The Village of Huntley has announced its foray into eCommerce with the launch of eUtility. This new capability is for online payment of water/sewer bills.

Financial report shows significant increase in Sun City home sales

Every month each resident of Sun City is billed a minimum Home Owner Association (HOA) assessment of $129.

The Association’s most recent Treasurer’s Report, dated May 26, was presented by Mr. Bob McGouey at the last Association Board Meeting, shows a summary of the community’s financials. The report detail is posted on the Resident Portal on the community website.

Slowly rising water bills catch residents’ attention

Keeping your lawn green with your sprinkler system has gotten more expensive this year. Some residents were surprised when they looked closely at their water bill.

Charter clubs make their post-lockdown debut

Not unlike honey bees returning to the flowers and fauna, the Sun City charter clubs have returned to active life.

Joe Quinn, a member of the Woodchucks, commented that “there were at least 90 members at the Woodchucks meeting on June second.” Activities at the Millgrove Workshop are expected to increase.

Another big development project could be in the works for Huntley

By now, Huntley residents may be fully aware of an Amazon receive center that will be occupying property on 41W368 Freeman Road. As completion for the receive center is anticipated for June 2022, it has begun conversations regarding the potential for other major businesses to take interest in coming to Huntley.

Charter Club Expo is back and scheduled for August 30

The May 24 Sun City Board meeting was held in the Birch room of the Fountain View Lodge. Fewer than 20 residents were in attendance, and an additional 34 were viewing the YouTube video broadcast at the beginning of the meeting. The YouTube audio experienced some technical difficulties.

Sun City Satisfaction Survey reveals residents’ thoughts

The ten-question 2021 Sun City Huntley Resident Satisfaction Survey has been published on the Sun City website for all residents to review. This survey was developed by Survey Monkey, an organization that specializes in developing surveys, at the direction of the Sun City Board and the Executive Management team.

Huntley PNC Bank branch set to close

As of July 16, there will be only eight banks on Illinois Route 47 in Huntley. The PNC Bank branch at the south end of Huntley is closing then.

Residential electronics, battery recycling event coming to Crystal Lake

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) will be hosting a residential electronics recycling event with the help of Elgin Recycling. MCDH has also continued to partner with Paper Tiger Document Solutions for document destruction and The Environmental Defenders of McHenry County for collection of Styrofoam, textiles, and fluorescent bulbs.

Board reverses decision on polling location

“It’s unanimous”, said Board Chairman Vito Benigno after the roll call vote to overturn the March 24 Board meeting polling place vote.

The approximately 75 residents in attendance in the Drendel Ballroom at the April 28 meeting cheered their approval.

Huntley bar faces noise complaints and code violation accusations

Tipsy’s Bar and Pizza, located at 10753 Dundee Rd., had to face the Village of Huntley’s Liquor Commission on April 22 due to various alleged violations of the Huntley Village Code and the Illinois Liquor Control Act.

In light of the Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine having been paused due to rare, but potentially lethal side-effects, the McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH), like other vaccination providers, has had to work hard to replace J&J vaccination clinics with either Moderna or Pfizer vaccines.

McHenry County Board Chairman highlights the COVID-19 pandemic in State of the County Address

On Tuesday, April 20 McHenry County Board Chairman Mike Buehler, gave his first ever State of the County Address. The presentation which was streamed via the county’s YouTube channel and available to watch on the McHenry County Government’s Facebook page, allowed Buehler to give some insight into what the county has done in terms of overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Natives are Restless” wrote H. G. Wells in 1933 for ‘The Island of Doctor Moreau.’ The same could be true today of the residents of Sun City in reaction to the Sun City Board of Directors vote on the future of the Kane County polling site in the Prairie Lodge.

The Prairie Lodge at Sun City has been used as a polling place since the early 2000’s. In accordance with the community’s governing documents signage and electioneering had always been prohibited onsite.

Board votes to change polling place location

Sun City residents will need to find their new polling place for the 2022 general elections. With a 4 to 3 vote at the March 24 board meeting, the Sun City board decided to not renew the polling place contract with the Kane County Board of Elections for 2022.
