Old School

When Sun City resident Joyce Zemba taught at St. Philomena’s grade school in Chicago in the late 1960s, it seemed unlikely that any of her students would be able to stand out. “I taught a class of 49 sixth graders and they were a handful,” said Zemba, who was a nun and educator forfourth, fifth, and sixth graders. Despite this, sixth grader Guido Lavorata managed to stay on Zemba’s radar.

The Marines have landed…

The Women Marines, that is. On Saturday, Ann DiValerio, of Sun City Huntley, hosted a picnic for the Women Marines Association of Illinois. The group is dedicated to preserving the heritage of the Women Marines. The WMA also provides a forum for them to “pass the torch” to the new generation of Marines.

Prior to becoming a lawyer and establishing a law firm in Huntley, Michael Fleck was a chemist. He did his research as part of the research faculty at the University of Illinois, and even earned a patent for an electric carbon monoxide filter.

Diane Naples was going to give up. Though she had already dedicated 15 years to creating Easter baskets and donating them to children in need, health issues sidelined her this year and, as she put it, “I just haven’t gotten back to my old self.”

Over the past year, former Sun City resident Jess Chipkin has become increasingly aware of what happens to animals living on large factory farms. Enter Crate Free Illinois, a nonprofit organization that Chipkin is in the process of forming. The Illinois-based group has a focus on animal welfare on factory farms, and the group’s goal is rather straightforward.

The Corrections

It was a routine day at the Joliet Correctional Center reception area one day in 1980. David Grant was a sergeant involved in prisoner intake.

One of the most notorious and infamous serial killers in the nation’s history entered the facility. He had just been convicted and sentenced to death for killing 33 young boys over a span of a decade. His name was John Wayne Gacy. He was well known to Grant and other corrections officials at Joliet that day. Grant, a resident of Sun City since 2012, tells it this way.

Lion Hearted

Jack and Helen Anderson have more than 50 years of service combined, yet there’s no sign of them slowing down. The two currently serve as the secretary and president of the Lions Club of Sun City – Huntley, respectively. “The Lions has always been a family thing,” says Helen. “It’s something we can do together, and it has been a lot of fun.”

Her father’s keeper

Suzy Phillips Anderle of Sun City was seven months old in September, 1944, when her father, Joseph L. Phillips, was killed in action in World War II. For the past year, she has worked to enhance his legacy of service with her own historical research and travels. On this Veterans Day of 2014, this is her story:

When Tiger and Eleven show up in Neighborhood 20, everyone perks up. As they are pushed around in their customized vehicles, folks come out of their houses to greet them. Residents stop weeding their gardens to say hi, jogging fitness buffs stop and say hello. By the end of 1997, Sun City was swiftly beginning to take shape. The south end of Huntley was a vast construction zone. Streets, wetlands, and neighborhood parks were emerging, sites for activities and sports were on the drawing boards, and colorful gardens and flower beds were springing up.

This coming Sunday, April 27, a group of Sun Citians will celebrate a very unique anniversary. Neighborhood 2 of Sun City is 15 years old this month, and that makes Sun City 15 years old. N.2 was the first one formed in the community in April, 1999.
