On Aug. 8, friends and family of legendary WGN agribusiness broadcaster Orion Samuelson, gathered at Jameson’s Charhouse in Sun City to celebrate his retirement after 60 years on the air.

Gloria Samuelson, Orion’s wife, explained that there were about 65 people in attendance at the celebration, which included other big-name guests like Emmy-Award-winning entertainment reporter and critic Dean Richards and WGN Radio AM 720 anchor Steve Alexander who was named as Orion’s successor back in January.

Carole Michalsen celebrated her birthday on March 16, 2020. Michalsen said, “The next day we went into a shut down.”

On March 17, the U.S. tightened restrictions as coronavirus cases surged and stocks took their biggest plunge since 1987. The number of confirmed coronavirus cases in the United States reached 4,600 on March 17 with 85 deaths. Cities and states across the country announced increasingly tight restrictions to slow the spread of the flu-like virus. Sun City residents began their tenure of staying home.

Sun City residents share love of teaching and great outdoors

Huntley Police Department ‘take to the sky’ in support of the Illinois Special Olympics

The Huntley Police department announced that on Friday, Aug. 20, from 5 a.m. to 12 p.m., officers will take to the rooftops at the Dunkin Donuts located at 12090 Princeton Drive and the Dunkin Donuts at 9800 Route 47.

The reason why residents will find police officers on the rooftops of these two establishments has to do with the Huntley Police Department’s support of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois.

Lindahl moved to Sun City right before the pandemic hit and all activities were curtailed. But Wildflower Lake was open, and Lindahl was thrilled that there was a lake where she could enjoy fishing.

Sun City residents see significant savings with solar

My closest neighbor installed solar panels on his home approximately two years ago and I was curious regarding any benefits he was receiving. The first questions I asked him were somewhat obvious.

“Why did you decide to go solar? Are they expensive? Are they worth it?”

Dress for success

The ever-active Sun City group, Sew N Sews, has recently launched their latest endeavor. Their newest mission is to contribute to the world-wide foundation, “Dress a Girl.”

Since 2006, Dress a Girl has provided new dresses for girls around the World. The goal, as stated on their website, is “We dream of a world in which every girl has at least one new dress.” To date, the organization has delivered over two million dresses to 81 countries. People from the United States, Canada, Uganda, the UK, Philippines, Australia, Sweden, Costa Rica, South Africa, Germany, Norway, Okinawa, Japan, and Hong Kong are making dresses.

NNO is back

August 3 is the 38th annual National Night Out (NNO). According to Jim Uszler, President of the Sun City Neighborhood Watch and one of the coordinators of the event, “It’s the 19th time Sun City has celebrated National Night Out.”

According to the National Night Out website, “National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer.”

With another man vying for his sweetheart, he had to move fast … 70 years ago

We don’t usually expect most high school, or even college romances, to turn into long-term relationships, let alone last the rest of our lives. But one Sun City couple has defied the odds. Richard Schimmel first noticed his wife, Sue, at work. They both worked at Chicago Molded Plastic.

Sue said, “He kept trying to get me to go out. He kept asking until he succeeded.”

Next stop! Charter Club territory for Mexican Train

Mexican Train Dominoes is the newest Sun City Charter Club.

The object of the game is for a player to play all the tiles from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or trains, emanating from a central hub or station. The game’s most popular name comes from a special optional train that belongs to all players.
