Today, sixty-per cent of the world follow standard time all year long. As a result, many U.S. citizens (feeling the loss of that one hour of sleep) and their states are questioning the impact that changing clocks appears to have on their health.

Writing is no mystery for one Sun City resident

Sun City author, Michele May was always a passionate reader but didn’t start writing until she was 50.

Today the toys are different, and that toy box is called a “man cave” or a “she shed,” or it’s a cabinet in the garage. No matter what, the need for a toy box still exists today.

Chris Wojtas was watching Good Morning America on February 12 when she got an idea of how to celebrate receiving the second dose of the vaccine.

“The show had a competition; a taste-a-thon for the best chicken sandwich. I thought it would be fun to have our own Chicken Sandwich Taste-a-Thon.”

Required Minimum Distributions due again in 2021

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act, or CARES Act, waived the RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) requirement for everyone in 2020. The newest COVID relief bill did not extend the waiver and RMDs will resume in 2021.

Sun City residents continue to roll up their sleeves

Residents of Sun City definitely took notice when an email blast from the First Service Residential (FSR) management team arrived, informing residents of the news many had been waiting months to hear. In partnership with Walgreens and Jewel Osco pharmacies, Sun City was prepared to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to residents who signed up.

What if I miss my second vaccine appointment in Sun City?

Residents have praised how well organized the Sun City clinics were and how easy it was for them to have their next appointment scheduled for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, this does appear to bring up some concern for those who, for one reason or another, might not be able to make the appointment for their second dose at the next upcoming clinics scheduled to take place in March.

There’s no exaggerating the nuisance this has caused Huntley residents as even the Village of Huntley assistant director of public works and engineering Jason Irvin explained via email, “The Village of Huntley has seen 68% (21.9”) of its average snowfall (32”) in 3-weeks and with the extreme cold and basically no snow melt there is very limited area left to pile snow.”

Preparing for the next pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic appears to be finally winding down! Current statistics show large decreases in case numbers and fatalities. Thanks to Sun City/Huntley’s fabulous management staff and outstanding neighborhood reps, seniors (choosing to do so) have already received their first corona virus vaccination with a second (booster) shot to be given to them in the next few weeks. Masks and social distancing practices are still advised by the government, but a post-pandemic world is now in reach.

A few days after a riotous mob was stirred to violent, deadly insurrection by Trump’s lies about a stolen election — with absolutely no evidence in support except his deceptive words — I found myself walking past the sporting goods department in Walmart. The shelves behind the counter were bare.

“I didn’t know you sold toilet paper in sporting goods,” I joked to the cashier.

“We don’t,” she said. “That’s the ammunition shelves.”

Home at last

On January 6, Jenny Reynoso, 18, was operating on practically no sleep. She’d been up most of the night praying the rosary, unable to eat because of a nervous stomach. As a distraction, she and her brother, Johnny, 14, played video games while they waited by the phone. When the phone finally rang at 1 p.m., Jenny dropped the video game controller she was holding and lunged for the phone.

On the other end of the line, Jenny’s mother, Maria, spoke in breathless excitement. “Guess what?” she told her kids. “Your Dad is coming home!”

Shoveling it forward

Nancy Jenks posted on the Wildflower Lake Neighbors page, “If anyone needs their driveway shoveled, send me a private message. I will take the exercise.”

Jenks did receive a response on Facebook. The post read: “My church friend always needs shoveling. She is recently widowed, nice woman.”

“I worked for a company that provided T.V. facilities for everyone. We designed, built, and rented T.V. facilities for the broadcast industry,” Culler said.

2021 Exercise Resolutions by the numbers

Author, Jo Craven McGinty, in her Wall Street Journal article (January 2021), informs us of numbers important for carrying out successful workout resolutions this year. She first cautions us to mark the calendar day of March 7. This is an important date because, according to one study, it takes 66 days to develop a new habit. Unfortunately, according to Gallup Polls, 80% of resolutions are broken by mid-February, with the most common vow of “exercise improvement” then lost in the shuffle.

What can Sun City expect in the next phase of the COVID-19 vaccinations?

As many residents may already be aware, both Kane and McHenry Counties are in the process of gearing up to begin distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine to individuals of group 1B which includes those that are ages 65 and older.

Trash it or pass it?

Residents, at one point or another, may have wondered to themselves whether the piece of garbage they are about to throw away should be recycled instead. The U.S. generates approximately 262 million tons of municipal solid waste annually, according to a report done by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The biggest portion of waste comes from consumer disposal of paper products, plastics, and food.
