Helping hand

Bonnie Scherkenbach, a Sun City resident, isn’t afraid of change.

Having once taught first, second, and third-grade children, she later felt the pull to switch gears and embark on a new path.

Scherkenbach said, “I decided to return to school and work on getting a master’s degree in counseling, focusing on gerontology. I went from one end of the age spectrum to the other. I got three different internships as part of my program. Those were at the Palatine Township Senior Services, Condell Intergenerational Day Center, and The Barrington Area Council on Aging (BACOA). After finishing my degree, I was employed at BACOA for 20 years.”

Happy 100

Sun City Bridge Charter Club took a moment away from their serious game to celebrate resident John Snow’s 100th birthday not once but twice. Pat Zenner, a resident and bridge player, said, “On May 31, in the card room at the lodge, we will have a cake to celebrate his birthday.”

Not to be outdone, the Monday night bridge group also celebrated Snow’s centennial birthday with more cake on June 3.

Sandi Karnatz said, “John is an amazing man and bridge player. He likes to play no trump. Everyone who plays with him knows that.”

Prairie Singers concert a hit for local students

Sun City Prairie Singers put on a hit show on June 8 at the Willow Creek Community Church of Huntley. The cast of 79 Prairie Singers, 22 Prairie Voices, and nine Prairie Singers Pit Ensemble members with accompanist Barbara Klein were all directed by Denise Caliendo.

The hours of practice and crew of volunteers, ushers, ticket sellers, sound and lighting teams, and generous support to the musical programs all played an essential role in the production’s success.

Ask an Angel: June 27, 2024

As Independence Day approaches, I find myself reflecting on the notion of freedom and what it means to truly live a life of purpose and fulfillment. Recently, I’ve been feeling as if I’m stuck in a rut in my career. I feel trapped in a cycle of meaningless work that keeps me tied to a desk most of my day. I long for a greater sense of purpose and connection to my community.

In my search for a more fulfilling career path, I’ve been drawn to the idea of becoming a professional caregiver. The prospect of making a difference in the life of a senior while also enjoying the flexibility and independence that come with this line of work is incredibly appealing to me.

Ain’t life grand?

Father’s Day, a holiday we now celebrate with joy and gratitude, was not always a part of our cultural fabric. It was founded in Washington State by Sonora Smart Dodd in 1910, a woman of remarkable determination. This was a time when the role of fathers was not as publicly recognized as it is today. The first celebration was held in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Dodd’s father, a Civil War veteran and a single parent who raised his six children, is the inspiration behind this day. After hearing a sermon about Mother’s Day, Dodd felt a similar holiday honoring fathers was long overdue. She initially suggested June 5, her father’s birthday, but the pastors needed more time to prepare their sermons; the celebration was deferred to the third Sunday of June.

The last little mouse in the trap

Mystery, murder, and intrigue will take center stage in Sun City Theatre Company’s summer production of Agatha Christie’s Mousetrap.

The play is set at a remote guesthouse, where seven strangers are trapped by a snowstorm. When a police sergeant arrives to investigate a murder nearby, suspicion is cast in all directions as the strangers are questioned and reveal their sordid pasts.

Bringing history to life

Todd Ary and Mark Stahl, teachers at Heineman Middle School, sent students outside of the classroom and brought history to life for their students.

Ary said, “We invited veterans from the community, allowing students to interview them and show veterans how much their service is valued.”

Sixteen veterans representing the Army, Marines, Air Force, and Navy branches of service participated in the program.

A penny saved is a penny built

Russ Becker finished a castle that took 15 years to build. It was featured in My Sun Day News in June 2022. Since then, residents and friends have encouraged him to keep on building. He has completed nine buildings. Recently, his finished projects included the Pentagon and the St. Louis Arch.

Shipping time

Jim Eggers, a Sun City resident, has always been passionate about ships and architecture. He recently completed building a historically accurate replica of the Yacht Mary.

Eggers said, “I started this project 40 years ago. I purchased this kit, which was a replica of the Yacht Mary. It is 1/54 scale of the original, a gift from Amsterdam for King Charles II. It was not a fighting ship. It was a pleasure ship.”

The restoration project is led by Desert Rat’s owner, Mike Kellner, who first found the plane chopped up into pieces back in 1984 in an overgrown field near Bangor, Maine, according to Desert Rat restoration volunteer, Bill Stanczak.

Mother’s Day memories stitched into keeepsakes

Daughters and sons hold close, cherished memories of their mothers, whether it be a trip, a celebration, or a note in a lunch bag. Some are lucky to have special sentimental items. Candi Thuringer has kept some beautiful crocheted items that her mother, Melly, made for her two daughters. Each outfit is a piece of the past.

Thuringer said, “My mother crocheted and was a seamstress. Everyone she loved got a beautiful crocheted blanket. We have a special round crochet blanket that is a treasure. She crocheted so many different things for my daughters. My daughters both came home from the hospital in the most beautiful, crocheted blanket woven with hues of soft colors and an outfit that mom had made.”

Book signing fundraiser aims to help nonprofit shelter

Debby Bailey, a Sun City resident, volunteers at Young at Heart, an animal shelter, and is working hard to raise funds for the organization. It is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to saving the lives of senior pets.

At a high school reunion, Bailey reconnected with Debbie Phillips. Bailey said, “We immediately bonded again, both having in common the love of animals, especially cats. I found out that Debbie wrote a book about her cat, Heidi. It was a children’s book, ‘The Empty Bed: Tails of Heidi’. It was so cute, and I loved the story and the illustrations.”

All dogs go to Heaven

A widely-known saying by an unknown author reads: “When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.”

Wrigley, a St. Bernard, was a beloved figure in Sun City. His gentle nature and friendly demeanor earned him the title of ‘mayor’ and ‘mascot’ of our community. His massive size was matched only by his even bigger heart, which he shared freely with everyone he met.

Letter carriers’ food drive provides critical help

The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) of the United States Postal Service is making a significant contribution to end hunger in the Huntley community. They are sponsoring the Annual Stamp out Hunger food collection on Saturday, May 11. This event, held every second Saturday in May, mail carriers in over 10,000 cities and towns across the country collect donations. This initiative, which began in 1993, has grown into the nation’s largest one-day food drive.

Harriet Ford, President of Grafton Food Pantry, emphasizes the crucial role of our community in this effort.

Sun City’s Schwan returns home with pickleball gold

John Schwan, a Sun City Pickleball Charter Club member, is a national champion after winning his age bracket gold medal at the Minto US Open Pickleball Championship April 14 in Naples, Fla.

Sun City residents take part in Young Authors panel

The Young Authors’ program, an initiative sponsored by the Huntley School District, provides a platform for kindergarten through 8th grade students to showcase their creative writing skills. The program’s goal is to foster a love for writing and storytelling, encouraging students to express their unique perspectives and ideas. Each student had the unique opportunity to pen their original stories, which esteemed community volunteers then evaluated. The selection process is rigorous; one exceptional winner was chosen for each grade level.

The judging panel, including dedicated community volunteers from Sun City, played a crucial role in the selection process. Their commitment and expertise were instrumental in identifying the most outstanding authors. Their names include Judy Cieciwa, Julie Ford, Pat Hector, Dolores Kuta, Mary Nogar, Diane Nolan, Sandra Pelka, Kathy Render, Joan Riffner, Valerie Tomanica, Barbara Yarbrough, Dolores Kuta, Karen Hutchings, Darcy Chadwick, and Heather Elder.

Consumer Reports finds concerning levels of lead and sodium in Lunchables

On April 11th Consumer Reports issued a statement about the popular lunch kits, Lunchables (prepackaged boxes of deli meat, cheese, and crackers marketed mostly for children.) Brian Ronholm, director of food policy at Consumer Reports, stated “The Lunchables and similar lunch kits we tested contain concerning levels of sodium and harmful chemicals that can lead to serious health problems over time. The USDA should remove Lunchables from the National School Lunch Program and ensure that kids in schools have healthier options.”

Blooming beauty

r only four days each year, this large and sprawling crabapple tree at the corner of Cherry Hill and Oak Grove catches the eyes of many passersby and neighbors alike.

‘He was always my hero’

Dolores Fischer of Sun City never knew much about her father’s service in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II. With only a plain brown box she found among her parents’ things containing pictures and military forms, she thought she’d never know the full details of her father’s bravery. But 25 years after his death, Dolores made the discovery of a lifetime.

When Dolores Fischer was a junior in high school studying WWII, her U.S. History teacher suggested that his students interview their fathers who were war veterans. Fischer knew that her father flew in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, flying Boeing B-17s, a four-engined heavy bomber aircraft. Beyond that, details were scarce. When she asked him to let her interview him, he seemed uneasy.

Sun City resident achieves goal of running past every SC home for the second time

In 2021, Todd Kane managed to run by every home in Sun City. He started on January 1, 2021, and it took 66 days and 228 miles to run past 5400 homes. He decided to do it again.

Kane said, “I completed the final 2½ miles on March 2, 2024. This time, it took 61 days. The coldest run was on January 15, at -6 degrees F. You just dress for it. There’s no bad weather, just bad clothes. The warmest day was January 2 at 54 degrees F.”

Sunflower Garden Club prepares for Spring Basket Sale

Sun City’s Sunflower Charter Club will hold its annual Spring Basket Sale on May 11 at Fountain View Pavilion. This fundraiser will raise funds for the Garden Club’s Scholarship Fund for Huntley Community School District 158.

Vice-President Marsha Geist of the Sunflower Garden Club said, “The Sunflower Garden Club has been very active in fundraising and this past year has donated over $10,000 to various organizations.”

Hands-only CPR training part of public health in Sun City and Huntley

The Huntley Fire Department organized a hands-only CPR event and provided essential instruction on using the AED for the Sun City Woodchucks. This demonstration was a significant opportunity for everyone to practice life-saving techniques on an adult mannequin. Lt. Kelly Gitzke, Director of Mobile Integrated Health, Huntley Fire Protection District, provided this training.
