You’re standing on an artificial turf court, about 50 feet long. You roll a little red target ball, called a pallino, in the same way you roll a bowling roll down the alley, only much slower. Then you take a bocce ball, about the size of a softball, but much heavier, and try to roll it as close to the pallino as you can.

Highly successful swim performances were given by the eight Stingray tankers who attended this year’s Six County Senior Olympics Swim Meet.

Bocce’s Tournament, A Big One

Sun City’s Bocce Club is one of, if not, the biggest Charter Club of all. The 700-member Bocce Ball group is planning its post-league tournament on August 30, and it should be one of the biggest competitive events of the year. Get there early if you want a good parking space. If it rains, the event will be held on August 31.

Free fallin’ at 70

Mary Lou Dorgan, a very youthful-looking resident of N. 30, celebrated her 70th birthday on July 31 by jumping out of an airplane at 14,000 feet over the Mississippi Valley in western Illinois. It wasn’t a dare or a bet or a “something-to-prove,” daredevil act. This was simply a fun way to celebrate a birthday, like you or I might decide to invite a few friends over for cake and ice cream on birthday number whatever.

Rules of the water

PH-check! Total Alkalinity-check! Chlorine Level-check! Filter pressure-check! Temperature-well, almost check! Looks like Sun City’s computer- and manually-assisted swimming pools are doing just fine on these hot days of summer. When “water relief” is an oft discussed subject, a sultry, warm Sunday might bring as many as 160 people to cool off in Meadowview’s pool alone. That, of course, does not include Prairie Lodge’s indoor and outdoor pools or Sun City’s two spas.

Sun City Huntley Teams Medal in 2011 Senior Olympics

This year’s Six County Senior Olympics has concluded with all three Sun City, Huntley, teams being awarded medals in their respective sports. Teams were entered in both the age 60+ and age 70+ divisions of the Softball Tournament and one team in the recreational division of the Volleyball Tournament.

There are ladies in the pool hall!! Back in the day, this shout would often spark protests and pandemonium in pool halls (ahem, billiard parlors). Proper ladies wouldn’t want to be seen in one. Even if they did, the guys probably wouldn’t let them in.

What do ducks do when they’re out of the water? They play and eat, of course. What do Stingray Swim Club members do when they’re out of the water? They play and eat, of course.

Hot to fox trot

Nick Koplos, Neighborhood 32B, won second place in the 10 Mile Fox Trot Race held in Elgin on Memorial Day. Nick, 74 years old, competed with other male runners in the 70-74 year age category. Mr. Koplos currently runs an average of 20 miles weekly as training for long distance races.

Golf Club promotes friendships

Golf probably has attracted the largest number of people to move to Sun City, Huntley. And Whisper Creek Golf Course that winds through the community continues to be a big reason for the success of the Sun City Golf Club, and for the visibility and positive reputation of the development.

Bob Kennedy is one tough softball player. At the Sun City Softball League’s opening ceremonies on May 14, he showed up at Eakin Field wearing shorts and a light jacket amid 45-degree temperatures and 20-mph wind.

Volleying for competition

Sun City resident Richard Desmond of Neighborhood 27 definitely believes you’re never too old for a little healthy competition, which was why he organized the first Huntley “World” Senior Volley Ball Tournament for the Huntley Park District Senior Volleyball Program.

Fighting cancer with Bingo

In 1999, Marianne Ricciardi’s son, Pat, was diagnosed with a serious and rare form of pediatric bone cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma, right after his 22 birthday. Given only a 35% chance of survival, Pat and his family consulted all the leading specialists. When they finally performed surgery, Pat’s tumor was the size of a cantaloupe.

Have you ever driven in a car when someone suddenly cuts in front of you, and then you or another passenger shouts out to the errant driver, “What’s the matter? Are you blind?” Well, you may want to think again before saying that in the future. It is doubtful that a good blind driver would cut in front of you like that, but there could be a blind driver driving a car.

Sun City resident wins Midwest pickleball tournament

Sun City has some seriously talented pickleball players. Five of them recently went down to St. Charles and almost stole the show.

Moving ‘fjord-ward’

This past August, Nick and Joanie Koplos of Neighborhood 32B enjoyed a wonderful 16-day trip to France, England, and the Norwegian Fjords, located on the SW coast of Norway. While their experiences in France and England were strong in historic encounters, Norway provided the Sun City couple with daring physical challenges.

Sun City’s Sportsmen’s Club is one group that hits its target, over and over again. You might say they’re a bunch of straight shooters.

At Sun City, tennis is a year-round sport. The hardy tennis enthusiasts who hang around Huntley when cold weather comes stay active with the serves and volleys at welcoming indoor venues in the Huntley area.

Turnouts

Sun City’s Pickleball Club completed its 2010 outdoor season in September with a three-part tournament involving doubles teams. A double-elimination playoff was held in three categories: men’s, women’s, and mixed doubles.
