Who said CyclePaths don’t clean up well?

I live in Sun City. My granddaughter stays with us every Tuesday after school and we take her back to school the next morn- ing. She has been collecting aluminum cans from 15 neighbors that save all their cans for her.

The Stingrays Do the Turkey Trot

With the memory of five Stingray Swim Club members having successfully completed September’s O’Hare Airport’s New Runway 5K Run/Walk, Stingray Nancy Cihlar felt motivated to initiate the club’s new event: a Thanksgiving Day Turkey Trot. Thus, a new way of moving was begun for the swimmers!

A Valentine’s Day bonanza for charity

For the seventh consecutive year, Sun City’s Stingray Swim Club celebrated Valentine’s Day. This year the festivities actually were held on Feb. 14.

Ladies luncheon donation

On December 9, Kathy Sapko, from the Royal Atwoods section of N-3 in Sun City Del Webb, hosted a Ladies Christmas Luncheon. Approximately 30 women attended, and instead of exchanging gifts, it was decided that the ladies would make a donation to the Grafton Food Pantry of women’s personal items that the Pantry had suggested.

An afternoon at the Swan Lake Ballet

As a very young child, I remember listening to beautiful classical piano music such as Frederic Chopin’s Polonaise in G Minor. For many years of her own youth, my mother, Marcella, had been trained in the classic form of ballet known as “pointe.”

On Oct. 10, Neighborhood 18 (Monarch Ridge) celebrated their 10th year as neighbors. Known as The Neighborhood That Cares, approximately 90-plus residents attended this special event in the Drendel Ballroom. Our Activity Committee planned this special event, inviting all our neighbors and included former neighbors who lived here and moved.

Hoofers and Hunks getting ready for 12th annual show

The Hoofers and Hunks are working hard to present an entertaining tap show for their families and residents of Sun City at the end of September. The shows will be 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday, September 28. An additional show will be 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29. All shows will be at Drendel Ballroom at Prairie Lodge.

My first car

During my first and second years of attending the U of I (Navy Pier) in Chicago, (long before the U of I Circle Campus constructed), I used the CTA, (Chicago Transit Authority) from my parent’s home near Belmont Ave./Elston to Howard St. (elevated), to Grand Ave to the Navy Pier. It was really a drag, especially in winter.

Meramec Caverns

Meramec Caverns, approximately 1 hour outside Saint Louis near Stanton, MO, get visitors from all over the world because of its “young and growing” cavern system. Nestled in the Meramec foothills, the natural cave system was carved from the limestone bedrock deposited by the inland sea approximately 100 million years ago.

Been cruisin’ Illinois Drive for 15 years

Hosts Jerry and Margaret Krebs invited all the original homeowners who moved to Illinois Dr. in 1999. Thirty-seven neighbors attended a pot-luck part on July 16 to celebrate their meeting 15 years ago.

Five Free July “Learn to Swim” Seminars

Under the supervision of Stingray Swim Club’s past president, Terry Hora, the US Masters’ Adult Learn To Swim Month of April became a reality here in Huntley. For five of the month’s Wednesdays, Terry and his entourage of club instructors guided six residents who expressed a desire to learn the basics of swimming.

Sun City resident people’s choice winner

Linda Carney’s painting of a 1920 image of Huntley’s first school bus was the People’s Choice winner in a recent Huntley history art contest. Carney, of Sun City Huntley, won $100 for having created the most popular artwork.

Huntley firefighters ‘fill the boot’

Members of the Huntley Firefighters Union Local #4106 and Huntley Fire Protection District, along with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, celebrated their 60-year partnership and kicked off the fire fighters’ annual Fill the Boot fundraising campaign to benefit children and adults affected by muscle disease throughout the Huntley area.

For over 10 years, over 500 Easter baskets have been specially made and given to children in need. Easter is a sign of hope, and I felt an Easter basket for a child would give them hope for a better year.

On Jan. 12, five Stingray Swim Club members rose early on a crisp Sunday morning. Their goal was to participate in the first Masters swim meet of 2014, held at the Des Plaines Lattof YMCA. The Sun City tankers were comprised of Terry Hora, Nancy Moore, Mark Schark, Joan Souchek, and Joanie Koplos.
