MY SUN DAY NEWS
Winter is fading at long last, my sonâs first winter in his ânewâ house â a hundred-year-old gem with all the charm (and harm) that a century can bring. And although Dave loves the previous ownerâs bathroom renovation, he learned during the recent cold spell that there was nothing charming about the poorly insulated water pipes in the uninsulated crawl space.
The one and only good thing about being empty nesters is that Chris and I have a bit more room in our home. Mary, our daughter, recently moved to the State of Washington. Either we could let her room remain empty so that the echo of our sighs and tears would be that much louder or we could gather the paint and drop cloths and get busy.
It’s time once again for St. Patrick’s Day. A time when the aroma of corned beef and cabbage assaults your nostrils, beer and clothing magically turns green, and everyone starts speaking in horrible Gaelic accents. In days gone by, when things were normal, we attended the Celtic Club’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration.
Awards donât matter, or so they say. We as moviegoers vow these incidental trinkets and baubles are just important to Hollywood. We pretend that there is no meaning to them with each passing year. But yet we still talk about them, using this line of thinking. Just who are we trying to convince? I, for one, have sat on this theoretical fence.
Letters for the week of March 11.
A sneak peek at Huntley Area Public Libraryâs renovations.
My husband and I are approaching older age. I experience âsenior momentsâ from time to time. I havenât been diagnosed with dementia, but I am aware that thereâs dementia in my family history. Although weâre rather active, we do realize that weâre slowing down.
Residents of Sun City definitely took notice when an email blast from the First Service Residential (FSR) management team arrived, informing residents of the news many had been waiting months to hear. In partnership with Walgreens and Jewel Osco pharmacies, Sun City was prepared to administer the COVID-19 vaccine to residents who signed up.
Residents have praised how well organized the Sun City clinics were and how easy it was for them to have their next appointment scheduled for their second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. However, this does appear to bring up some concern for those who, for one reason or another, might not be able to make the appointment for their second dose at the next upcoming clinics scheduled to take place in March.
Remote learning and ZOOM classes are not just for school children anymore. The Sun City Computer Club has been offering Zoom classes and remote technical support since the Covid-19 meeting restrictions were implemented.
Itâs not only been a frigidly cold year in terms of temperatures reaching below zero somedays, but snowfall has been exceptionally on the heavier side this winter season. Thereâs no exaggerating the nuisance this has caused Huntley residents as even the Village of Huntley assistant director of public works and engineering Jason Irvin explained via email, âThe Village of Huntley has seen 68% (21.9â) of its average snowfall (32â) in 3-weeks and with the extreme cold and basically no snow melt there is very limited area left to pile snow.â

I met a new friend a couple months ago, and after we had covered all the important topics of conversation â football, fishing, musicians we saw back when we lived a free-range pre-Covid life â he swung onto the topic of the Capitol insurrection. âYeah,â he said, âI hated seeing all those left-wingers posing as Trump fans smash up that building.â

Sun Cityâs Whisper Creek Golf Course was part of a recent merger and acquisition hole-in-one in the world of golf course conglomerates.
As the drifts of snow in Northern Illinois reach several feet and the temperatures consistently have a minus in front of them, I have been spending my evenings on Glassilaun Beach in Ireland. The pure white sand, clear blue water, and mountains in the backdrop make for the perfect place to escape. Why did my great grandmother leave the place that every fiber in my being longs to go to?
The Covid-19 pandemic appears to be finally winding down! Current statistics show large decreases in case numbers and fatalities. Thanks to Sun City/Huntley’s fabulous management staff and outstanding neighborhood reps, seniors (choosing to do so) have already received their first corona virus vaccination with a second (booster) shot to be given to them in the next few weeks. Masks and social distancing practices are still advised by the government, but a post-pandemic world is now in reach.
Jim and I received our first and second COVID vaccinations, and it seems like there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel. Restaurants have officially opened up for indoor dining, and we now may be able to keep giving you restaurant reviews instead of rambling on about our dysfunctional life. We do, however, put the fun in dysâfunâctional!!!
With all the time in the world to sit inside, we ponder what is to become. Thanks to the Snowpocalypse, the endless number of entertainments on streaming are just begging and enticing us. One thing films and television shows can do best is broaden our concept of the future and our place within it. From âThe Twilight Zoneâ to âStar Trekâ, questions have arisen to our very place in the universe. Gladly these films can wet that appetite; from worst to best.
Letters for the week of February 25.
Iâm a concerned daughter-in-law writing on behalf of her 87-year-old mother-in-law. Her vision is declining due to glaucoma. While she is taking it in stride, Iâve noticed that she seems disheartened recently. She has always been a rather dignified person. She would never dare leave the house before âputting herself togetherâ and feels that loungewear should only be worn in the privacy of oneâs home.
Mike and Cindy Ptak had no reservations about getting the coronavirus vaccine. Why do they find it important to get the vaccine?

Given the resounding oddities in my life, like how my birthday and my wedding anniversary are the same day or how thereâs always a cardboard box laying around our house like a straggler from a move (though weâre going on nine years here) or even at the Sun Day how we celebrate odd-year anniversaries rather than the primary even ones (10 years? Whatâs so special about that? Letâs have a bash for 11!), it makes complete sense that I have a Mac computer but am running Windows on it.
A few days after a riotous mob was stirred to violent, deadly insurrection by Trumpâs lies about a stolen election â with absolutely no evidence in support except his deceptive words â I found myself walking past the sporting goods department in Walmart. The shelves behind the counter were bare. âI didnât know you sold toilet paper in sporting goods,â I joked to the cashier. âWe donât,â she said. âThatâs the ammunition shelves.â

On January 6, Jenny Reynoso, 18, was operating on practically no sleep. Sheâd been up most of the night praying the rosary, unable to eat because of a nervous stomach. As a distraction, she and her brother, Johnny, 14, played video games while they waited by the phone. When the phone finally rang at 1 p.m., Jenny dropped the video game controller she was holding and lunged for the phone. On the other end of the line, Jennyâs mother, Maria, spoke in breathless excitement. âGuess what?â she told her kids. âYour Dad is coming home!â

Nancy Jenks posted on the Wildflower Lake Neighbors page, âIf anyone needs their driveway shoveled, send me a private message. I will take the exercise.â Jenks did receive a response on Facebook. The post read: âMy church friend always needs shoveling. She is recently widowed, nice woman.â

Mark Puleo, an Accuweather staff writer, gave us an updated article on January 22. He informs us that researchers are continuing to increase their understanding of the role ultraviolet (UV) radiation plays in the pandemic spread.
The only contested race in Grafton Township for the February 23 Republican Consolidated Primary is between Assessor Alan Zielinski and his challenger Terra de Baltz of Huntley. While voting is important whether itâs one contested race or a dozen, the significance of this race is what this story will detail.
Sun City Residents are receiving a letter from the Illinois Department of Employment Security regarding their unemployment benefits.
Nancy has been giving me dirty looks and the old âstink eyeâ for over 46 years and it finally caught up to her. She finally wore her eyes out and as a result, we have been running weekly to the ophthalmologist for over a month. The first treatment was getting her eyes zapped with a laser.
As a part of my annual physical exam, my doctor ordered an EKG. My results indicated a 50 percent blockage in one of the arteries in my heart. I assumed that would mean surgery; however, my doctor recommended we start with medication. Although I am fortunate that I havenât had a heart attack, this past physical gave me pause.
âMa Raineyâs Black Bottomâ was released on Netflix back a couple months ago, but in case you havenât seen it here it is. Adapted from the play by August Wilson, we are taken back to 1920s Chicago on a hot summer day where everything goes wrong in this recording session. The star is late, tensions between the band come to a head; not one thing happens as it should.
