MY SUN DAY NEWS
I slipped the leather jacket on and walked to the upright mirror, with a chorus of three female âOo-o-ohsâ echoing behind me. Always a good sign. It was a beautiful leather jacket, the kind I could never afford when they were in style decades ago. The leather was soft and supple (âlike buttuhâ some might say) and it fit me perfectly. It was the bomber style I love, with snap closures at the wrist, leather collar, and zip-up front. Slash pockets on the side, and two internal pockets with buttons to close them for security. Even a zip-out liner for extra warmth on cold, windy days.

The healthcare expansion movement began in Huntley with Sun City in 1999. It was followed by Heritage Woods assisted living that later expanded into memory care.
It developed speed with the Deerpath of Huntley rehab place in Regency Square, and then Kinetic Physical Therapy near Village Green joined the parade. Then came the Huntley Springs hotel-like project for seniors that opened last month on Powers Road behind Culverâs. It hit a crescendo of development with Centegra Huntley Hospital, now called Northwestern Medicine, last year. Not to be outdone, the Alden independent and assisted living/memory care complex on Regency Parkway, also opened in 2017-18.
Sun Cityâs board of directors met for the last time in 2019 on December 4, and took care of a lot of business in a two-hour meeting in Drendel Ballroom, Prairie Lodge.
Dark Waters is a true story. In 1978 a lone farmer outside of Parkersburg W. Virginia, took the first step in a journey that literally turned into an odyssey lasting almost forty years. He had lost 190 of his cattle, and he blamed the drinking water in the creek running through his property.
T’was the day after Thanksgiving, the turkey’s picked clean, the relatives all left, and the house looks like a crime scene. The leftovers were wrapped, and put away with care, in hopes that we have, another dinner to share.

Health Central Guide’s article titled “Insomnia 101” discusses the importance of a good night’s sleep. The publication informs us that “Sleep is as important to our lives as the food we eat and the air we breathe.”
Thoughts of a gigantic blender may pop into your mind should you see or need medical treatment on the new linear accelerator at Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital. The linear accelerator by Varian Medical Systems costs just under $3 million. Itâs ensconced in a vault of the newly expanded $9.5 million cancer center.
A little girl opens her hand and her mom places a few coins on her palm. Her fingers curl up on top of the coins. The Mom and her daughter step forward. A smile from the volunteer bell ringer encourages them. Mom lifts her daughter just a few inches. The little girlâs eyes are now even with the top of the red kettle. From there, the girl puts her hand over the opening of the kettle and the coins slide in.
My wife recently inherited a large mirror that she wants me to mount on the wall. Iâm not sure if a molly bolt would be strong enough.
My elderly parents are relatively healthy. They live on their own and can navigate their lives with little help. While Iâm grateful that my parents are doing so well at their age, I still get concerned about their health. My daughter is expecting her first baby later this month. My daughter has expressed concern over my parents, her grandparents, meeting their first great-grandchild because sheâs a first-time mom and worried about protecting the health of her newborn.
October marked the month Sun City celebrated 20 years of continuing to provide a unique lifestyle to many, but November 10 presented some residents with yet another opportunity to celebrate a different type of milestone. When Sun City broke ground back in 1999, people like Nancy Visconti, eagerly jumped at the chance to be one of the first to close on a house in the newly established resort-style community. Although much has changed throughout the years, the memories created amongst the pioneers of Sun City remained.

When I was a kid, somewhere in my teens, at least, my dad got me an off-white knit sweater with a print of the American flag knitted into the chest. He immediately saw my disappointment upon opening it but rather than supporting the disappointment with his own, he told me Iâd like it when I got older. Almost thirty years later, while I still have the sweater, I still donât like it (sorry Dad!).

In 1951 the most wanted Christmas gift was a View-Master. But for most boys, the ultimate gift was a Lionel Train Set. Mike Ptak was lucky to receive that gift when he was just a one-year-old. He still hasnât found a better toy.

Sun City accounts for the most represented area in the 2019 Village of Huntley resident survey. The Village of Huntley resident survey has been conducted annually since 2010 to obtain a better understanding of residential opinions. The 15-question survey ranged from simple subjects including quality of life within the village to the feeling of public safety.
For 20 minutes, Kristi Cordle talked to her son, Pierce, on his cell phone in the middle of his shift. Kristi could tell he was upset and confused about something, but she couldnât tell exactly what was wrong. She didnât know then that he tried to âwalk it offâ in the hallways of the hospital where he worked. He couldnât walk it off and so he told staff he was going outside to his car.
This is the final communication to Sun City residents about the 2020 operational and reserve maintenance budgets.
It was a tooth-popping weekend when the grandkids came to visit, and one more chance to learn how far out of the loop I have fallen. âDo you want to pull it?â I asked Olivia as she sat at the dinner table, wiggling that little bicuspid in her lower jaw. She had three teeth in her head that were ready to jump ship, but this one was likely to be the first to weigh anchor.

In September 2019, Eileen and I (N17) traveled from one of the lowest points in Colorado, Royal Gorge, to one of the highest, Pikes Peak. Earlier in the year, my wife stated, âI have a conference in Colorado and you should come with me.â Since I really enjoy the mountains, I immediately said, âYes!â and so began our planning for the trip.
I have a badly stained bathroom sink drain; it’s stained rusty. I have tried OxyClean, CLR, bleach, and BonAmi to get rid of the stain. Nothing even makes a dent! It is only in the master bathroom of our Drury model.
During the midday hours of November 1, a robber struck a home in Sun City Neighborhood 31. Police were called to the 13700 block of White Oak Road shortly after 2 p.m. that afternoon in response to the robbery, which occurred at some point between 9:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.
The Train Club will open its traditional Holiday Train Display on Friday, November 22, 2019, the Friday before Thanksgiving.
Reader’s Digest’s (May, 2019) “Get the Sleep You Need” Article by Samantha Rideout and Corey Whelan gives us strategies for developing consistently good sleep habits. Are you aware that, besides the terrible feeling of sleep tiredness, continued sleep deprivation can lead to depression, diabetes, stroke, obesity, Alzheimer’s disease, heart attack, and cancer?
I left the theatre, adrenalin flowing after watching some of the most scintillating car racing scenes ever on screen, jumped into my four cylinder Subaru and raced home at five miles an hour over the speed limit. Itsâ been seven hours since I left the cinema and my heart is still pumping as I think about what I saw.
Restaurants come and go, and that is why we have been writing this column for seven years, and have never repeated a restaurant. There is a relatively new restaurant on Randall Road, which took the place of a barbecue restaurant which was obviously not as “famous” as they would have hoped to have been.
For the past fifty-five years, my elderly parents have always hosted a large Thanksgiving family dinner. Including everyone, there are over four nuclear families represented and nearly forty people in total. Everyone looks forward to this event and everyone chips in something, regardless of my momâs insistence to take care of it all.
Letters for the week of November 21.
Do you know that socks are the most requested item by homeless shelters? And they are also the least donated item. For most, clean socks are not given a second thought. But for the homeless, having a clean pair of socks provides warmth and comfort, protecting skin from infections.

Although everyone knows that the current season is called autumn or fall (or âspooky season,â if youâre really in the know), it seems like it really should be called Pumpkin Spice Season. People love autumn for a plethora of reasons, but lately, the only one that seems to matter is the fact that pumpkin spice can be found anywhere. In fact, Starbucks launched a campaign this year declaring the first day of fall to be August 27, which was the day they brought back the beloved Pumpkin Spice Latte (or PSL).
By now, most Sun Citians are aware that Steve Bytnar, Russ Howard, and Bob Wainscott were re-elected to the Sun City board of directors starting in 2020.
As frightening as it is to imagine a madman with an assault weapon targeting indiscriminate victims, it is even more harrowing to imagine a weapon like that in the hands of a madman who views himself as a patriot. Someone, for example, like major league umpire Rob Drake, who on October 22 tweeted this threat: âI will be buying an AR-15 tomorrow, because if you impeach MY PRESIDENT this way, YOU WILL HAVE ANOTHER CIVAL WAR!!! #MAGA2020.â
