MY SUN DAY NEWS
Weâve all been hit with the phrase, the warning shot, the disclaimer: âNo offense, butâŠâ Maybe when you hear it, you brace, or roll your eyes, or take a deep, heavy sigh. Either way, one thing is clear: an offense is on its way.

The Neil Simon play, âThe Odd Coupleâ comes to life on the Drendel Ballroom stage in July, highlighting the hilarity of two mismatched roommates trying to share a New York apartment with very different standards of cleanliness and decorum.
Today â as with pretty much any other day â I heard our president call American journalists âthe enemy of the people.â He says it so often you would think he invented the phrase: âEnemy of the people.â He says it every time he refers to the press, that most American of institutions that our Founding Fathers insisted on protecting when they drafted our First Amendment, the most urgent document of them all, guaranteeing our most important rights that most clearly define what it means to be an American.

In front of Greg Wardâs home, a colorful flag, bedecked in rainbow colors, flies just left of a vivid blue front door. The words Love – Peace – Respect – Pride are emblazoned across the brightly colored flag. Ward has had the flag out two years in a row in June to celebrate LGBTQ+ Pride Month, which marks the anniversary of the Stonewall riots that occurred in June 1969.
76-year-old Sun City resident Bonnie Archer never expected an average trip to Walmart would result in such an unforgiving nightmare. At approximately 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, Archer received a call from an unsuspecting Seattle number.

You are not alone if you have no idea what Mintonette is. It is the original name of the game of volleyball. It was invented in 1895 by William G. Morgan. The game was designed to be a combination of basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. The first volleyball net, borrowed from tennis, was only 6â6âł high (people were shorter in the nineteenth century).

The high winds we had 2-3Â months ago managed to get behind one of my shutters and break it. With the nice weather, it’s time to replace it, but where do I get a replacement?
A sign with flashing yellow lights that is appearing at more and more crosswalks in McHenry County is meant to alert drivers to stop for pedestrians and cyclists.
With May being the wettest on record and temperatures on the rise, we are bracing for an intense start to mosquito season in Illinois. If weather conditions hold, multiple broods of floodwater mosquitoes are expected to hatch out by the end of June and nuisance levels will be high.
This is the third Toy Story sequel, and as usual, Pixar and Disney join hands providing us with another amazing production.
As you may or may not know, Nancy is President of the Sun City Bocce Club. Every year, from the beginning of May to the beginning of June, it is absolute chaos in the Dining Duo household. There are an average of 12 calls a day with such earth shattering questions like: “did I sign up for bocce ball last year, if so, when do I play,” and the ever popular, “where are the bocce ball courts?”
Having just succumbed to my second thoracic vertebrae (spinal area) fracture in 3 1/2 years, I thought it only fitting to discuss this unfortunately common malady found among seniors. The word, osteoporosis, is derived from the ancient Greek, osteo, meaning “porous bone.” It indicates an increase in size of the honeycombed display of small spaces inside the normally healthy bone. The occupant of the weakened bones may then, more likely through a fall, produce a break or fracture in the hip, wrist, or spinal area.
Recently Christopher, my son, his girlfriend, Celeste and I drove down to Tennessee. Each of us had our own purpose for making the trek. Christopher, as an incoming freshman, was attending the summer orientation for Middle Tennessee State University. This was his chance to register for classes, meet potential friends, and start to acclimate to literally a new climate. It was also important for him to share with his girlfriend where he would be spending the next four years.
As the summer begins to heat up, Iâm concerned about my aging parentsâ outdoor activities. They enjoy gardening and trail hiking. My dad plays golf at least twice a week. My mom likes to walk around outdoor craft shows and farmers markets. They even attend outdoor summer concerts. While I appreciate their active lifestyle, and by no means want to discourage it, I worry about their vulnerability to heat stroke.
Sew Hop’d Brewery opened its doors in Huntley April 27, 2019. Lance Lamb, one of the partners of the brewery, pointed at a large, three-panel stretched canvas reproduction of Bordenâs Dairy building in 1908. âWe wanted to remember the history of this structure,â he said. âWe found this picture and decided we had to display it.â

Previously Iâve written about my, I wonât say âaversionâ to technology, but my general unease about it, which makes me sound like Iâm one of those people who think Terminatorâs Skynet will someday become a reality and take over the world. Thatâs hardly the case. Though Siri is a little unsettling sometimes. My unease isnât so much paranoia but practical concern. Basically, I donât trust it. Itâs not dependable.
I went in today for my bi-annual dental cleaning. (Or semi-annual? Bi-sex-monthial? I donât know. I go in every six months â you do the Latin.) Anyway, the deal went down the way it always does â Sue, the dental hygienist, asks me to open my yap, and after taking a gander she says: âWow, wisdom teeth!â

Besides setting your biological clocks for the same time each night for sleep and the same time each morning to awaken, what else establishes a comfortable slumber environment in your house? For sure, dimmed lighting in a cooled temperature bedroom with a comfortable mattress and multiple pillows is critical for good sleep habits, the kind that establish deep-sleep rhythms.
The third annual veterans softball game is an event planned to honor all Sun City Veterans. Glenn Groebli began the tradition in 2016. âI want all Sun City Veterans this year to come out to the game on June 29. We want not only to recognize our softball veterans but all of the Sun City Veterans. I am asking that they just come. Show up at the 3rd base dugout at 2:30,â he said.

I write the songs, Manilow might have said. But the residents at Sun City sing them. Sun City Dell Webb presented a Barry Manilow tribute show on Thursday, May 23. The Drendel Ballroom filled with residents and guests to enjoy the music of their youth. The tribute was advertised as: âNo stranger to the tribute world, Jay Gates impersonation of Barry Manilow has âFanilowsâ agreeing that this act is rapidly becoming âtheâ show to see! Be it the classic âCopacabanaâ or the sing-along âCanât Smile Without Youâ or the show-stopping âEven Now,â Jayâs Faithful representation of Barryâs voice, combined with a jaw-dropping visual portrayal and multi-media presentation, always leaves audiences wanting more!â

For this column, we have the opportunity to hear from Julie Janoski, the Plant Clinic Manager for The Morton Arboretum. As the Plant Clinic manager Julie is in charge of helping to field questions brought to the Arboretum by homeowners, gardeners and professionals.
Our fans in the bathrooms are rather noisy. Broan has new replacement fans that are supposed to be quieter and move more air. Have you had any experience with these and are they easy to replace?
Several years ago Annamarie and I left the confines of our home and headed for a warmer climate so we could thaw out for a few weeks. All well and good. We left Illinois on February 19th, at which time it was still Central Standard Time. Along the way we crossed into the Eastern Standard Time zone, which means we lose an hour, so when the clock now says itâs 4 P.M., my body still thinks itâs 3 P.M., which I guess isnât that big of a deal.

How does one fully encapsulate a life in two hours? I am completely baffled as to how to work that out properly. All the many nuances that make up oneâs experience, what do you leave in and how do you remove the rest? Then you have to add music onto that, to boot. Some musical biopics hit the mark while others just fall into the same clichĂ©s that would you would find in a Behind the Music television special. âRocketmanâ splits the difference.
Spring is in the air, tra-la, tra-la. Nancy’s mind turns to thoughts of . . . landscaping. She gave me a reprieve for the last two years due to my bionic knee and hip replacements. As a result, all of our perennials somehow turned into annuals. It was now time for me to pay the piper. We took a ride to our local nursery and began looking in the “no watering required and impossible to kill” plant section. After hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of dollars spent on “supposed” perennials, and a must have concrete smiley face sculpture for another couple hundred dollars, the two of us and our wallets were both running on empty. In keeping with the garden theme, we decided to have lunch at Lily Garden Restaurant in Lake in the Hills.
Are there services available for seniors who live alone and need a little help? Can I arrange temporary care without having to sign my dad up for long-term care?
