MY SUN DAY NEWS
As the summer begins to heat up, Iâm concerned about my aging parentsâ outdoor activities. They enjoy gardening and trail hiking. My dad plays golf at least twice a week. My mom likes to walk around outdoor craft shows and farmers markets. They even attend outdoor summer concerts. While I appreciate their active lifestyle, and by no means want to discourage it, I worry about their vulnerability to heat stroke.
Sew Hop’d Brewery opened its doors in Huntley April 27, 2019. Lance Lamb, one of the partners of the brewery, pointed at a large, three-panel stretched canvas reproduction of Bordenâs Dairy building in 1908.
âWe wanted to remember the history of this structure,â he said. âWe found this picture and decided we had to display it.â
Previously Iâve written about my, I wonât say âaversionâ to technology, but my general unease about it, which makes me sound like Iâm one of those people who think Terminatorâs Skynet will someday become a reality and take over the world. Thatâs hardly the case. Though Siri is a little unsettling sometimes. My unease isnât so much paranoia but practical concern. Basically, I donât trust it. Itâs not dependable.
I went in today for my bi-annual dental cleaning. (Or semi-annual? Bi-sex-monthial? I donât know. I go in every six months â you do the Latin.) Anyway, the deal went down the way it always does â Sue, the dental hygienist, asks me to open my yap, and after taking a gander she says: âWow, wisdom teeth!â

Besides setting your biological clocks for the same time each night for sleep and the same time each morning to awaken, what else establishes a comfortable slumber environment in your house? For sure, dimmed lighting in a cooled temperature bedroom with a comfortable mattress and multiple pillows is critical for good sleep habits, the kind that establish deep-sleep rhythms.
The third annual veterans softball game is an event planned to honor all Sun City Veterans. Glenn Groebli began the tradition in 2016. âI want all Sun City Veterans this year to come out to the game on June 29. We want not only to recognize our softball veterans but all of the Sun City Veterans. I am asking that they just come. Show up at the 3rd base dugout at 2:30,â he said.

I write the songs, Manilow might have said. But the residents at Sun City sing them. Sun City Dell Webb presented a Barry Manilow tribute show on Thursday, May 23. The Drendel Ballroom filled with residents and guests to enjoy the music of their youth. The tribute was advertised as: âNo stranger to the tribute world, Jay Gates impersonation of Barry Manilow has âFanilowsâ agreeing that this act is rapidly becoming âtheâ show to see! Be it the classic âCopacabanaâ or the sing-along âCanât Smile Without Youâ or the show-stopping âEven Now,â Jayâs Faithful representation of Barryâs voice, combined with a jaw-dropping visual portrayal and multi-media presentation, always leaves audiences wanting more!â

For this column, we have the opportunity to hear from Julie Janoski, the Plant Clinic Manager for The Morton Arboretum. As the Plant Clinic manager Julie is in charge of helping to field questions brought to the Arboretum by homeowners, gardeners and professionals.
Our fans in the bathrooms are rather noisy. Broan has new replacement fans that are supposed to be quieter and move more air. Have you had any experience with these and are they easy to replace?
Several years ago Annamarie and I left the confines of our home and headed for a warmer climate so we could thaw out for a few weeks. All well and good. We left Illinois on February 19th, at which time it was still Central Standard Time. Along the way we crossed into the Eastern Standard Time zone, which means we lose an hour, so when the clock now says itâs 4 P.M., my body still thinks itâs 3 P.M., which I guess isnât that big of a deal.

How does one fully encapsulate a life in two hours? I am completely baffled as to how to work that out properly. All the many nuances that make up oneâs experience, what do you leave in and how do you remove the rest? Then you have to add music onto that, to boot. Some musical biopics hit the mark while others just fall into the same clichĂ©s that would you would find in a Behind the Music television special. âRocketmanâ splits the difference.
Spring is in the air, tra-la, tra-la. Nancy’s mind turns to thoughts of . . . landscaping. She gave me a reprieve for the last two years due to my bionic knee and hip replacements. As a result, all of our perennials somehow turned into annuals. It was now time for me to pay the piper. We took a ride to our local nursery and began looking in the “no watering required and impossible to kill” plant section. After hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of dollars spent on “supposed” perennials, and a must have concrete smiley face sculpture for another couple hundred dollars, the two of us and our wallets were both running on empty. In keeping with the garden theme, we decided to have lunch at Lily Garden Restaurant in Lake in the Hills.
Are there services available for seniors who live alone and need a little help? Can I arrange temporary care without having to sign my dad up for long-term care?
Robert G. Higgins, who has been a real estate attorney for over 40 years, made a special deal 5 years ago. It kick-started his annual 270-mile bike ride from Boston to New York. Higgins explains, âIn the fall of 2014, my wife got me a Fatherâs Day gift for a four-day cycling wine trip in California. I had a conflict with a real estate closing that was scheduled for the same time. I approached the client, Steve Lattimer, to extend the closing to October and explained the situation. Steve focused on the word, ‘cycling.’ He asked me if I did much cycling. When I responded that I did, he agreed to extend the closing only if I agreed to ride in the Tri-State Trek. And that was the start of it.â

Itâs May 22, and Iâm back from my morning run. Dressed in long running pants, a long-sleeve sweatshirt, and shoes soggy from the cold rain. Itâs 49 degrees, and yet June is only one week away. With a winter like ours, itâs not unreasonable to be thankful itâs rain and not snow.
My buddy Jack is a high school science teacher â the kind of teacher you wish you had when you were in school. Thatâs because he goes out of his way to make science real and interesting in an everyday way. Take his asparagus study, for example.

The Anglers have an interesting history. âBob Ward our past president, and current Board member has been researching our club history,â said Randy Johnson. âHe has a committee that has done considerable work in discovering our roots. Bob is a long-time resident of Dell Webb, and been involved with the Anglers for over a decade.â While their history might have been unclear at the start, itâs anything but fishy.

We know that dementia causes irreversible, progressive and ultimately fatal cognitive decline. It doesn’t just affect memory but also impairs the executive (decision-making) function, learning, language, and basic movements such as swallowing and walking. Keeping this in mind, it is no wonder that caregivers are in great demand today.
Sometimes two clubs are better than one. This year, two Sun City clubs joined together to share the experience of creating ceramic pieces with their grandchildren. According to Cathleen Chay of the Clayground, the event was a success.

The Del Web Fitness Center is now offering a new class called PSE Stretch. It is being offered at both Fountain View and Meadow View Lodges. PSE stands for Positive Serene Experience created by its instructor, Jeanne Silvis.
The Stingrays’ Swim Club held their 7th Annual Charity Auction on Saturday, April 27. This year’s party was hosted at the home of Terry and Linda Hora with Roseann Losasso and Joanie Koplos serving as auctioneers. The afternoon’s festivities raised a total of $1717, which was divided amongst the club and their two chosen charities: Huntley’s Animal House Shelter and the National Down Syndrome Society.
A reader asked where he could get LED bulbs that fit in the lighted house number plate. We didnât know so we asked our readers and one responded.
The late great Jack Lemmon is noted for popularizing the phrase âDying is easy, comedy is hard.â Although the epithet is older than him, the reasoning behind it still rings true. Humor is truly subjective to the viewer with no control by the person performing. And much like Seth Rogen, humor has taken a beating.
Two of our friends who were recently married asked us to join them for dinner one Friday night. They were a very interesting couple. She is from the good ole U. S. of A, and he is from the U.K., but we won’t hold that against him. They met while he was a tour guide in London, and she was vacationing there. It was a match made in heaven, he is British and she is a dentist. Since they live in Talamore, and we live in Del Webb, we met them for dinner at the Montarra Grill in Algonquin.
Thursday, January 31, 2019. What were you doing on that day? What about the next day, February 1? I know it is hard enough to remember what we had for breakfast somedays, much less what we were all doing 4 months ago. For the vast majority of us, though, the answer to both questions would be we were at home.

Although the primary recipient of this weekâs Happy Trails doesnât know Iâm writing publicly to him (because Iâm writing my column only after reading his), you could consider this an open dialogue between me and Sun Day Columnist TR Kerth. That said, for context you may want to read his column in this edition before reading mine.
