MY SUN DAY NEWS
I am often asked how we know how to repair so many different things. We have all been fixing things for 40-60 years, so we have a lot of experience, but the internet has added substantially to our competence.
James Baldwinâs 1974 novel, If
Beale Street Could Talk, is brought to the screen in an extraordinary adaptation by director Barry Jenkins. The story is set in Harlem in the 1970s and tells the story of two young lovers played by Kiki Layne (Tish) and Stephan James (Fonny). Friends from early childhood their relationship evolves into an enduring and everlasting one.
I need to slow down. I am a caregiver to both my parents and I am burning the candle at both ends. I need a little motivation to help me. I do give myself permission to take a break, but I get right back into a frantic pace. Help!
T’was the 18thof December and look at our car, all gassed up, shined up, and ready to go far. The luggage was packed with clothes for all weather, and believe you me, not light as a feather. And so, armed with beef jerky and Twizzlers, began the Dining Duo’s âChristmas Vacationâ to see the grand kids in Jupiter, Florida.

This is the first in a series of stories on the Huntley Area Library Districtâs proposal for a $12.9 million addition to its building at Main Street and Ruth Road in Huntley. The district tentatively plans to place a proposal to voters on the ballot in the April 2 election to fund the expansion.

Before I get started, let me explain. I didnât make it. I lost my way. I failed. At the outset of 2018, my goal was to read 24 books this year (two for every month), but I didnât achieve it. Despite always having a book or two weighing down my purse (pages getting dog-eared, crumbs between the pages), and often purchasing new books that caught my eye every time I went to Target (âIf I buy it, then I know Iâll read itâ), it didnât happen.
I spent this holiday season in Naples, Florida, where my wife and I bought a home in 2009 to escape the bitter Chicago winters. On Christmas morning this year, I slipped my kayak into the water by the Jolley Bridge at Marco Island and paddled the Big Marco River westward toward the Gulf of Mexico, tugged by the falling tide. The wind was northerly â neither help nor hindrance just yet.

âThe Bellak/Benker/Kozior Christmas Eve tradition started 100 years ago. We are now over five generations,â said Allison Parise, daughter of Sun City residents Art and Ann Benker. The multi-generation and multi-family celebration also includes a multitude of food and activities.

First a belated Happy New Year to my friends at the fitness center, Ed, Bernie, Tony and Russ, I hope to get back soon. Itâs been a few weeks since we published, so there is a little catching up to do.

The next time air raid sirens go off in Chicago, people are going to think, âWhatâs happening to the White Sox?â Whoever heard of a fly ball being called a âcan of corn?â If an opposing batter strikes out at U.S. Cellular Field, where does he go, after Ken Harrelson says, âhe gone.â

This is a summary of the most significant and relevant items from the December 5 meeting of the Sun City Board of Directors.
Wall Street Journal’s 2016 article “Nice People Really Do Have More Fun” explores the topic that even though “Selfish nastiness is all the rage (these days)…research shows that pleasant behavior leads to more success and happiness in life.” This was especially proven by two British scientists in 2010 when they looked into the effects of engaging in small daily acts of kindness.
Iâm wondering if lock boxes are allowed here at Sun City? I know other Del Webb communities allow them. How would one go about getting one and who could install it?
We gathered at momâs house for the holidays and it was obvious something has changed for her. We found her house a mess, papers all over the place, and she looked a little unkempt. My mom has always been very tidy and organized, so these findings were a little unsettling. I am going to suggest she thinks about her options, but I donât even know what is available. What do families do in this situation?
Christmas decorations should all be about magic. Addie and Mike Metoyerâs house has that magic. The Christmas tree is just the start. Their entire home from the front yard, to kitchen, to the basement is filled with jolly decorating ideas.

Thereâs that popular saying about insanity that goes, âInsanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.â So in other words, it means parenting.

âI retired from project writing and found a new passion â space,â said Sun City resident Ken Kozy. This passion led Kozy and his wife Mary to Cape Canaveral, Florida to watch the launch of OSIRIS-REx on September 8, 2016. This spacecraft held a special meaning and cargo for Kozy.

My wife would like to replace the mirror in the small bathroom of our Adler. I have loosened the metal clips and it wonât slide out. I tried to pry it from the wall, but it will not release. Thinking it was taped or glued to the wall, I pushed a putty knife behind the mirror and hit something which felt metallic. Any thoughts on how to get the mirror off the wall without breaking it or destroying the wall?
It was the late 1980s, and Tom Lowe was 39 years old. He was a family man working in the business world, and he was an enthusiastic sports fan. But something was missing. He wanted to get closer to the action, as he puts it today, to athletic competition. He couldnât play on, or coach a team. What to do?

âSun City is indescribable. I really do not want to be in any other place. It is remarkable.â Ron Saballus, a native Chicagoan, says those words very often. He came to Sun City on or about August 1 of this year. He is off-the-charts enthusiastic about his new home.

On the end-table in what I call the âreading nookâ in my house are ten little books. They are worn and weathered â understandable, because all are well-thumbed childrenâs books, each of them older than I am. I have had them forever. (Well, for all of my life, which is forever to me.)

He’s jolly, dressed in red, and he came to breakfast in Sun City. Santa Claus may love cookies and milk, but he also enjoys a hearty breakfast, it seems! The festive feast with Santa in Drendel Ballroom, catered by Jamesons, included scrambled eggs, French toast, waffles, sausage and bacon, breakfast potatoes, mini muffins, mini danish, fresh fruit, and an array of drinks.

With the continuation of the holiday season and its multiple ensuing social interaction occurrences, here is some health info for now and into our new year. Two food science and food microbiologists have exploded myths about what is and isnât safe in the controlling of harmful bacteria, especially in our use of food items. Paul Dawson and Brian Sheldon, in their Wall Street Journal article, explain, âIt turns out that many of the things we do to keep ourselves safe from harmful bacteria just make the problem worse.â

Another year and 23 restaurants bite the dust. This was a tough year to review restaurants since we had a run of mediocre venues. Jim and I sat down, locked ourselves in our office, and tried to pick the best 10 restaurants by pondering over the reviews we did last year. âPonderingâ is such an understatement; it was more like yelling, screaming, biting, and kicking.
The holidays come and go, and always make me feel a little blue and often I find it hard to get out of the slump. Iâm sure Iâm not alone with these emotions. What do people do to get through the season, which is supposed to be festive?
Last year there was a plethora of good or great films hitting the theaters around this time of year. Some of the best included The Man Who Invented Christmas, The Post, The Darkest Hour, and The Greatest Showman. Included in that time frame was The Shape of Water, undoubtedly one of the five worst films in history, and of course it won the Oscar for best movie.
Sun City Woodchucks Ray Harris, John Sterling, Jim Moran, Ed Cutler, Al LaPelusa and Ken Szymura delivered beautifully hand crafted toys for Christmas presents for the children of Food Pantry families.
Letters for the week of December 13.
The Sew n Sews seem far from just âso and sos,â and Darlene Hagner is no exception. She shares her talents with others not only by the quilts she makes and donates, but also by teaching classes and assisting members one on one. She is a familiar face at the clubâs workroom. Karen Semancik said, âI joined Sew n Sews and started signing up for classes. Members freely volunteer their time to teach other members various skills. My first class instructor was Darlene Hagner. I was so impressed with her willingness to spend however long it would take to have you learn a new technique. She is very generous with her time, encouraging, and patient. I’ve already learned a lot from her, and I’m looking forward to my next class. I feel that she practically lives at the club. She is always there.â

Hoodie. Left-click. Shout-out. Twentysomething. World Wide Web. What do these words have in common? They all became an official part of the Merriam Webster dictionary the year I was born. Although it might seem like words begin their lives by first appearing in the dictionary, the opposite is true. Words have to prove themselves before earning their place with the greats.
