MY SUN DAY NEWS
Leadership transitions are often controversial, difficult, involve power struggles, or come at the end of a bitter political contest. In corporate America, they frequently are dominated by strong personalities and the financial bottom line. In today’s government, one party loses and another wins amid a tumult of criticism and finger-pointing. In professional sports, if you don’t win, you quickly become expendable. But in Huntley and Sun City, we just had a transition that was quiet, mutually respectful, peaceful, and totally seamless.

This edition’s cover story is about Allen Pollack retiring from his position as Executive Director of Huntley Community Radio and Dave Eggers assuming the role. Although the story does an excellent job covering this transition and highlighting both players (Pollack and Eggers), I wanted to personally congratulate Allen Pollack for a job well done … to say the least.
“Thank you for your service, Erin,” I said recently to a young lady I know who was about to be re-deployed again soon.
But Erin isn’t in the military, as you might have surmised from my expression of gratitude for her service. No, Erin is a teacher, and her “re-deployment” would begin as soon as the new school year opened in mid-August.

“Sun City brought us together. Cub Fans and Sox Fans – it didn’t matter. It’s about friendship,” said Roy Diez, explaining how Retro Rovers became what they are today. Retro Rovers is a small group of Sun City Residents who have taken over 40 trips in an RV. “We make about 3 to four trips a year,” Diez said.

There is an opioid crisis in this country when prescription opioid deaths have more than quadrupled since 1999. According to the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, Georgia, “1 in 4 people who receive prescriptions for non-cancer pain in primary care settings struggle with addiction.” What began this epidemic? In the 1990s, drug companies were lobbying government agencies and physician groups to consider as a vital sign of a patient’s health assessment “pain levels” as low as ”4 out of 10” to require necessary medication.
I know how important it is to stay hydrated. My spouse, however doesn’t like water and therefore doesn’t drink much. I worry about this. How can I encourage him to stay hydrated?
You have two or more sillcocks on your house even if you don’t know the name sillcock. They are the outside faucets where you connect garden hoses and they often leak. If a sillcock leaks when the water is on, you are in luck as the fix is relatively easy. This leak is caused by a loose packing nut.
The Stingrays Swim Club participated in their annual Six County Senior Swim Meet on Thursday, July 19, at Addison Park District’s indoor swim pool. Through the years, our powerhouse Sun City team, led by Coach Len Lencioni, has consistently earned a record number of medals.
Nancy has been having a craving for different types of ethnic foods lately. I hope she’s not pregnant! This time it is a craving for German cuisine. She was reminiscing about how her and her mother would go shopping at the Harlem Irving Plaza (HIP) and out to lunch. She remembered passing by a cute German restaurant on Irving Park Road in Norridge called Edelweiss. So again, into the Mini-Mobile, and off we went in search of schnitzel.
I was not overwhelmed with this movie, although it was different and did have some moments. On my way out of the theater however, I talked to eight or ten others, all of whom gave it a hearty thumbs up. I will say this as an endorsement; no one got shot or killed, and there were no high-speed car chases. Tom Cruise would have been lost in this one, but then he’s not Asian.
For about 7 days this summer my daughter was consistently looking at her phone. While this isn’t out of the ordinary, what she was doing was mind-boggling to me. In preparation for moving into the Honors House at Kansas State University she had downloaded an app that allowed her to visualize what the interior of her dorm room might look like. She would longingly look at the 2” by 4” screen and picture herself there with her roommate succeeding in this wonderful environment that they created through a well-decorated room.
We need as many Huntley residents to attend this meeting as possible. This important meeting is regarding a proposed project for the Old School Site located on the northwest corner of IL Route 47 and Mill Street. A portion of the land also borders Main Street.
As you drive into Sun City, one of the first things you see is a sign that says, “This is a golf cart-permissible community.” It is designed to remind residents that they will see golf carts frequently throughout the community, especially in the warm weather months. The signs also warn visiting drivers of the presence of golf carts.

It was a normal Monday summer night. I had finished my day’s work and gone for my usual run. I was just about to relax when I received a call on my cell phone from a number that I didn’t recognize with a 646 area code (New York). Definitely a telemarketer, I decided, and let it go straight to voice mail. I let the voice mail message record itself, and fifty-four seconds later, I gave it a listen.

There will not be a contested board of directors election in Sun City this year. There will simply be a vote to affirm the uncontested re-election of four board incumbents. There will be no written ballots sent to each household. There will be no opportunity for residents to choose among five candidates for four open positions. There will simply be an acclamation vote by the current board in late fall. There was a contested election for less than two days last week, after the announcement about the number of candidates on July 31.

Ed Mosteig remembers peering into his stocking one Christmas morning and finding a wood burning kit from his parents. The kits contained a pen-like tool with a metal tip that, when heated, burns the wood it’s pressed against, creating possibilities for simple or elaborate designs. Several years ago, feeling nostalgic for his childhood Christmases, he put a wood burning kit into his wife, Diane’s, stocking. “She never had one as a kid,” said Mosteig. “But when she tried it, she burned herself. She put it away on a shelf and never used it again.”

Sun City resident Bob Ibach recalls the event that sparked his fascination with sports. “The first game was historic, as Don Larsen of the Yankees beat the Brooklyn Dodgers and threw the only perfect game in baseball history,” he said, recounting the 1956 game. This was only the beginning.

Only one more legal hurdle stands in the way of Barb and Chris Lincoln in their unique quest to create a major event venue on an old dairy farm on Huntley’s far north side. On July 26, the Huntley village board unanimously approved a complicated set of ordinances to create a legal Rural Event Venue category in the village code. Trustees amended the village’s zoning ordinance to 1) add Rural Event Venue to the definitions, and as a special use in a residential estate district; 2) created a special use permit for a Rural Event Venue in a residential estate district, and 3) added a site plan review section for proposed site improvements to accommodate a Rural Event Venue.

Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia or memory loss involving other cognitive abilities that interfere with daily life. It is not a normal part of aging, though the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Nevertheless, there are approximately 200,000 American citizens who are under the age of 65 with what is commonly known as Early-Onset Alzheimer’s. It is a progressively worsening disease with mild memory loss found in its early stages. Alzheimer’s changes typically begin in the part of the brain affecting learning.

If you have spent even a short amount of time outside in the last month, you are aware of an increase in the mosquito population in our area. The recent rains and high heat has created a floodwater mosquito superbrood of these aggressive mosquitoes.
“Medications?” the nurse asked. “None,” I said. She stared at me. “Blood pressure meds? Cholesterol?” She was just trying to be helpful, because geezers my age can forget. “Nope.” She gazed at the computer screen in front of her. “I don’t know what box to check,” she said.

My wife and I just moved into a house in Del Web and are doing some renovating as we move in. The Patio door needs replacing and the lock at the bottom doesn’t work, as it’s broken. The lock at the middle that locks to the frame on the wall has the handle broken. Plastic cover is broken off!
We all have those days we will never forget. It could be the milestones achieved such as weddings, birthdays or anniversaries. It could also be particular highs such as a birth of a grandchild or lows such as a death in the family. Sometimes the memories that stick with us the most are simply minutes spent with friends or hours spent alone.
The Neighborhood 35 Supperclub is on the road again. This time we traveled to the South Barrington Arboretum to “meet around the table” with our friends. What better place to do this than a restaurant with the name Incontro a Tavola, which loosely translates to “meeting around the table.” Due to some new construction and the fact that the restaurant is by a roundabout, parking is a challenge. Just be creative and put on your walking shoes. Since Jim’s new knee is not playing nice, I was his own personal valet parking attendant.

You may or may not have noticed I missed the last two editions, for a variety of reasons. Now that I am back in the saddle, there is a little catching up to do.
I never had trouble falling asleep or sleeping through the night. I would say over the past few years, this has changed and I am very frustrated. I don’t feel refreshed in the morning. You probably encounter this with others, what can I do?
Letters for the week of August 9.
You need more space? What about a larger room in a new location? No, you’re told nothing like that is available. How about remodeling your existing space and rearranging furniture and equipment? Yes, that might work, the Sun City Pencil & Palette Club decided recently as it tried to figure out how to accommodate its growing program of art and drawing activities in the Art Room in Prairie Lodge.

I recently turned 40, and it’s not what I expected. I never considered 40 old (a benefit of having siblings so much older than I am, which is really a benefit that keeps giving because the older I get the much older they remain…hahaha!), but I am undoubtedly middle aged, and I’m experiencing some pretty startling changes. I’m not talking about the mental, emotional, or physical maturing process. Nor am I talking about how I’ve reached the age where most greeting cards will declare me “over the hill.” If your forties are over the hill, then I’m just at the peak, and therefore, I am the top of my game! Take that greeting cards!
